Donny knocked on the door frame of William’s office as he walked in.

“Hey there,” he said.

William peered up from a stack of papers with a total look of desperation.

“Holy crap,” Donny said. “Guess I won’t be asking ‘how’s it going?’.”

He plopped down in one of the chairs facing William’s desk.

“I swear to God,” William said. “Between my work and my dad’s, plus all the phone calls I now have to field, I’m buried.”

“So, your dad did more work than you thought, huh?” Donny asked.

“I guess so.”

“How can I help?” Donny asked.

“Remind me that I love my job,” William replied.

“You love your job, William.”

“Bite me,” William replied.

“But seriously, how ARE you doing?” Donny asked. “I mean, aside from the work crap.”

“I don’t even know,” William answered. “I haven’t even had a chance to process any of it. It’s like I’m on autopilot. I’m not eating. Not sleeping. I’m not even drinking.”

“Whoa, this is serious,” Donny teased.

William put his head in his hands.

“I’m in way over my head, Donny.”

“Come on, man. You were made for this shit.”

William shook his head. Self-doubt and anxiety were getting the best of him.

“I don’t know. I don’t know. It’s just too much.”

Donny got up and walked around to William’s side of the table.

“Come on,” he said. “You need to get out of here. This can wait.”

“It can’t!” William protested.

“It can and it will. You’re going to have a breakdown if you don’t step away for a minute. And then you’ll be sidelined even longer.”

“The board is asking a lot of questions,” William argued.

“Your dad died. They’re going to have to wait for their answers. Come on. I’m driving you home.”

“Can we go to my mom’s house instead? I need to check in on her.”

“You don’t need to do everything,” Donny said as he guided his friend out of the office. “But a little Mom Time may be good for you.”
