FORTY-ONE

SID WALKED INTO THE HOSPITAL waiting room and found Travis slumped in the corner chair.

“Are you ready to go, Travis?”

Travis hardly raised his head. “Yeah, I guess so.”

“By the way, did I mention that Mr. Reed’s farm is a horse farm?”

A light of interest opened Travis’ eyes. “For real?”

“Yep, and Bob said he has lots of horseback riding trails as well as bike trails. So, come on. We’ll pick up your bike on the way.”

Travis jumped to his feet and grabbed his duffel bag. “Wow, man. That’s cool.”

They walked to the back entrance of the hospital and jumped into Sid’s car parked in the corner of the lot. Sid kept his eyes open for strangers loitering around the area as they pulled into the highway.

On the ten-mile trip, Travis fidgeted and finally turned to Sid. “Can I ask you a question, Sid?”

“Shoot.”

“Why didn’t God stop that bullet before it hit my mom? She was trying to do good, but God let her get shot anyway.”

Sid took a deep breath before he answered. “Travis, no matter how hard we try, we’ll never be able to understand why God allows some things to happen. At least, not on this side of the Pearly Gates. We just have to trust God while we’re down here and know that He loves us, even better than we love ourselves. And He wants the best for us.” He turned to Travis. “You believe in God, don’t you?”

Travis nodded. “Yeah, I guess so.”

“You guess so? Or you know so?”

“Awww, I guess I know so.”

They both laughed.

“If you believe there’s a God, then you have to believe the Bible is God’s words, right?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Well, the Bible says, ‘Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding.’ That means we shouldn’t try to understand God. He is great, powerful, all knowing, and everywhere at one time. How in the world can we understand something like that?”

Travis shook his head. “I guess we can’t.”

“That’s right. So, we have to trust, and know for sure that God loves us and wants us to trust Him. Sometimes He doesn’t answer our prayers in the way we want them to be answered. Sometimes He lets things happen to us to make us stronger Christians, and sometimes He doesn’t answer right away because He wants us to wait and trust Him. Then He answers them later. Does that make sense?”

“Yeah, I guess so. I was kinda mad at God for letting Mama die, but then when she came back to life, I decided that He did answer my prayer—just not when I wanted Him to.”

Sid smiled. “That’s right, so keep on trusting, no matter what happens. He’ll always answer when He wants to answer, and I guarantee, it’ll be the best thing for you.”

Sid pulled into the long driveway of a farm with Black Angus cattle grazing on one side of the fenced in driveway, and on the other side, several horses raised their heads and shook them at the car going by.
