Elin pointed to the phone numbers that she’d marked with a yellow highlighter on two lists. Lars looked at them eagerly.

“This number was in each case logged in to the same tower as Patrik’s number. At the Huvudsta subway station here in Stockholm, both numbers are in the same segment according to the triangulation. I’ll bet that this Natalia person lives somewhere around here, in an apartment where Patrik visited her. I checked, and Patrik was in fact here at least twice a week over a period of several months. And this number that I believe is Natalia’s was in this same location every day, mainly in the evening and at night.”

“Is that the only number that appears concurrently with Patrik’s at this location?” Lars said, looking dubious.

“Well no, of course not. But this number also shows up along with Patrik’s in Norrland. I can’t triangulate there, though, because only one tower is accessible from the cabin they rented. Which is why I have such a long list for that location – half of Östersund is logged on to this tower. But this number’s the only one that appears on the list in both Stockholm and Norrland at the relevant points in time. That’s how I was able to identify them.”

“Wow, how’d you do that? Did you go through the numbers one by one?” Lars gave her a doubtful look.

“Yeah, well I had some help.” Elin was being cagey because she felt insecure about broaching this subject. “Well, as it turns out, Carl has a little software tool. But as it also turns out, it wasn’t cheap.”

“That’s okay, it’s part of our expenses.”

Elin breathed a sigh of relief.

“That’s terrific,” Lars said. “What are we going to do with this number? Do we know where the phone is located?”

“Well, yes and no. The number’s been deactivated since this past 5 July – I suppose because Natalia removed the SIM card. Timewise this is consistent with the week during which Patrik rented the cabin and could be the day of the accident.”

“I see. But what’s the deal with the yes and no – I only understand the no part.”

“Well, I’ve gone a bit further. As you can see here in the list, you can actually glean additional information about the number. Not only where it was located, and which conversations were held, but also the identity of the actual phone that the SIM card was in. You can also see the make of the phone here – in this case a Samsung Galaxy S7 – and the so-called IMEI number, which is the ID number for this phone.” Elin paused to see if Lars was following, and when he nodded, she continued with her explanation. “You can use this number to search for new activity. And as you can see here, this phone was used a few days later in Jönköping, with a new SIM card.” Elin pulled two additional lists out of her pile of papers and pointed to the marked phone number.
