Josiah Grundy made his way up the flights of stairs to the top of the building and the offices of Fishcock and Purse. The same young man he’d dealt with when he’d handed back the lease, Steven Darcy, was in the office and he looked up enquiringly from his desk as Grundy entered.

‘Well, well,’ said Darcy. ‘Mr Grundy.’

‘Mr Darcy.’ Grundy nodded. ‘I’ve just been to my old shop. It looks like it’s still available.’

‘It is, but we’ve had quite a few enquiries about it.’

‘But no one’s taken it on as yet?’

‘Not as yet.’

‘In that case, I’d like to take it on for a short rent. Not the shop. I’m only interested in the flat above the shop.’

‘I doubt if the landlord will agree to that,’ said Darcy.

‘The landlord doesn’t have to know,’ said Grundy. ‘I was thinking of a private arrangement. Between you and me.’

‘He’ll find out about it,’ said Darcy.

‘Only if someone wants the shop and pays up the deposit,’ said Grundy. ‘And if that happens, I move out.’

‘Say someone sees you and there’s questions?’ asked Darcy.

‘You say you were worried about intruders, so you hired me to stay at the flat over the shop occasionally to keep an eye on it. Security.’
