Chapter Twenty-Six

We had dinner first before going to the hospital. On the way there, Cassie picked up a bouquet of fresh flowers. We didn’t talk much on the way over. It was a somber, solemn moment. I had pushed the image of Blake lying on the hospital bed from my mind. I didn’t want to believe he could get worse. A selfish part of me wanted him to be alive and to make crêpes for me. But I wasn’t the doctor. How long would he stay in a coma? Was he in pain? Would he wake up with his memory intact? My mind was filled with unanswered questions. I glanced at Cassie. She was quiet, lost in thought, frowning. I reached out to clasp her hand.

Bob was good at directions, and he liked to drive. We arrived at the hospital in good time and got out. We headed straight down the corridor. I wondered if the same guard would be there.

I was first in line as the door in the corridor swung open automatically. I looked to the right, toward Blake’s room. Kenny was in his usual spot. He stood when we approached and nodded in recognition.

“Hi, Kenny,” I said.

His shoulders straightened at the sound of his name. A smile played on his lips.

“How is he?” I asked.

“He’s about the same,” Kenny said. “But you still can’t go in.”

Cassie pushed open the door to Blake’s room, and we peeked in. She held out the flowers to Kenny. “Could you do me a favor and put them in his room … please?”

He hesitated. Maybe this was a new situation he hadn’t encountered before. I doubted it was in his instructions or protocol book, if there was one. Maybe Kenny wasn’t sure if he could go in?

Or maybe it was because Blake’s eyes were shut, and he wouldn’t be able to see the flowers.

“It’s something to keep him company, since he can’t have visitors,” Cassie said softly.

Kenny took the flowers and slipped into the room, placing the vase on the table next to Blake. I watched to see if Blake moved, but he didn’t. He was tethered to the machines, still in a coma.

Cassie murmured a “thank you” as Kenny passed us on his way back. I sensed her sadness, her energy levels plummeting along with any hopes she had of Blake getting better. There was nothing she or any of us could do.

Kenny went back to his station. I wondered what he thought—and if he really knew anything about Blake’s condition, would he tell us?

I stepped back, bumping into Bob looking over our heads.

Sniffles came from Cassie. A whimper escaped. She twisted her lips, trying to be brave, holding back the sobs. She didn’t attempt to leave, not yet. I stood next to Cassie for support and sensed her pain for this man who was more of a mystery to me now than ever.

Maybe it was the sound of Cassie’s crying or the intensity of our gaze. Maybe the flowers had something to do with it.
