CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Murphy sat in her office, instant coffee on her desk, going through reports on the Miller van attack. They had contacted each of the victims, including two who had chosen not to speak with the police. There were fifteen reports, with fifteen medical notes outlining the injuries suffered. Issues ranged from a sprained ankle to the catastrophic injuries Bob had suffered. He had suffered the worst of all the survivors. Murphy read the statement he gave to Parker. A notation showed he had given it to Mitch, who used VerbatimVox to transcribe the recording.

“I don't know what to feel. I can't really make sense of it. I don't know if I am angry or sad or scared. I can't believe it. It was really scary, everything happened so fast. I was just sitting there, having a drink. It was a beautiful day, and I was with my two best friends and we were laughing and joking and then there were all these horns. Car horns. And suddenly you could hear screaming, like shouting. And I felt this heat. My ears kind of popped, you know, like they would if I was on a plane.

“It felt like I got punched by a giant, like just…boom! It was like the universe collapsed on me. It was dark and there was so much screaming. I… it was weird. I was trying to stay so calm, I kept thinking it's okay Bob, just take it easy, you can figure this out.

“I could smell gasoline, a car engine. Well, truck. And I kind of looked up, and I saw all this metal, like bars and sheets of metal. And the tires. There were tires by… fuck. There were tires by my head and tires on my legs and all this metal and it was hot and stinking and this black smoke was all around. It was horrible. It was getting hard to see, and I was choking and screaming and it sounded like a freight train. I remember thinking, how the fuck could I get hit by a train? I knew something bad was happening, but I didn't know what.

“I thought, I have to stop screaming. I am screaming and screaming and screaming and I have to stop, but I can't. I can't make myself stop screaming. And then the truck was gone. I could see the sky, the blue sky and it was so clear and so beautiful that I thought, okay, you can die now. It's okay to die because the sky is so beautiful.

“But I didn't die. Not yet, anyway. The doctors have not said much. I have no legs. They did not ask if they could take my legs. I have a broken back. Lots of things are wrong. So much is broken, I'm broken. He shredded me to pieces.”

“Sweet Jesus,” Murphy mumbled as she wiped away tears. She tried not to think about what Bob was going through, what all the living victims were going through. She grabbed her bag and pulled out her colouring book and coloured in the first thing she turned to.
