CHAPTER 7

Once we were finally ready to go, Ethan opened the passenger side door of the Lexus for me. Such a gentleman! I admired the car, as we stood there for a few minutes, before I got in. It was a beauty—shiny, candy apple red color, new model of course. “This is the 2015 IS convertible.” I blurted out.

“You sure know your cars. Ethan started up the engine.

“I’ve been looking around for a new vehicle.”

“Uh, what’s wrong with yours?” Ethan asked as he drove down the street and slowed down as we approached the gate.

“Hi, go on thru.” The security guard motioned us thru as he opened the electric gates.

“Thanks.” Ethan gave a wave.

“My Dodge Caravan is only 5 years old, but in comparison to this sweet ride, mine would be considered a piece of junk. The hood and top of my minivan are peeling paint…real bad. It really has gotten worse over this past year. Looks bad!”

“Yeah, I noticed a little section of mine is starting to fade too. Ethan turned on the radio to my favorite channel—music from the 80’s of course. “Uh, that hot sun can be brutal.”

“I know, isn’t that true, Eric.” I giggled. “You know that Mr. Sommers—?“

“Yes, Mandy?” He gave a laugh.

“Something doesn’t seem right. There was a plaque hanging on his wall. He won some award or something or other. The name on the plaque was Robert Summers.”

“That does seem a bit strange. Uh, he does seem a little anxious about something. I can’t place my finger on it, though. Maddie, remind me when I stop; I want to do a background check on him see if he has any other aliases he goes by.”

“Sure thing. Oh yeah, on the plaque it said Cole County. Not sure if that will be of any help to you.” I said.

“I’ve never heard of a Cole County in Florida. Uh, must be another state. The background check should show other cities he lived in,” he said. I turned up the radio and we started singing to the oldies but goodies, songs from the 80’s. Ethan finally discovered the button that puts the convertible’s top down. We cruised down the street like we were teenagers out for a joy ride; I hadn’t felt this young at heart in such a long time.

Once we went over the toll bridge that overlooked the gorgeous view of the Gulf waters and reached the mainland area, Ethan turned down the music so we could talk again. “So, did you find out anything interesting when you visited Tiffany’s family?” I asked.

“I found out that her mother passed away 6 months ago from cancer and Tiffany moved in with her father a couple of months ago to get away from Kyle. Uh, Thomas said, ‘Kyle was a lyin’ cheatin’ piece of crap!’ Thomas explained that he does not believe his daughter would be involved in fraud either. Said she was recently baptized and wouldn’t do something so unchristian like that. Always put other’s first.
