Chapter Seven: Trimming the Fat
âAnd lift. And lift. Aaaannd lift!â
Jackâs skin had lost some of its pale yellowness. Instead, it flushed red as he lifted his five-pound weights. Deryk had moved Jackâs eating table so he could exercise comfortably in his recording room rather than his bedroom. The orange backdrop had become a staple on his channel.
âOne more,â Jack puffed, curling both his arms toward himself. He felt every part of his body burning. The heater being on full blast only added to the pool of sweat he sat in.
Deryk had suggested they get Jack out of his chair. Jack wanted to do so but on camera. Deryk declined to be on camera, so Jack decided to try it out on his own. While Deryk stood by, Jack recorded a video.
He sat in his chair, waving to the camera, then he planted both hands onto the armrests and pushed. His foot reached out toward the floor, like a hand grasping for help, and slowly Jack inched his way from his chair like a snail without its shell. His arms trembled, jiggling his entire body, but his foot planted onto the ground firmly. Putting his weight onto it, he felt the muscles constrict painfully. He lifted his other foot, still covered in a neon green cast, and quickly planted it down beside the other, refraining from putting most of the weight on it. His face had contorted into painful expressions, but there he stood, holding his chair for support. He looked at the camera and smiled, letting go of the chair. For a moment he tottered, like a baby taking their first steps, and then he was as still as a statue, waving at his audience.
He edited this into a short video and posted it, racking up views quickly. There were the people who congratulated him, the people who condemned him for his weight, and the old fans who hated his new content. He was happy with his small bits of progress and decided to do a live exercise video.
Deryk helped Jack back into his chair and retrieved the weights for him, and as Jack pumped his iron for a live audience, Deryk watched in awe.
He couldnât believe the rapidity of Jackâs weight gain. It was incredible, but with as many videos as heâd made in the last three years and the thousands of pounds of food he must have consumed, it made it more believable.
He silently cheered Jack on from behind the camera, acting as his cheerleader. He convinced himself he would help Jack get to the point of self-preservation. No one would have to wait hand and foot on him anymore, and maybe his wife would return. Deryk had been put into these situations often, replacing an MIA spouse. Most times, he couldnât blame them despite what heâd been through. Marriage isnât a contract to take care of someone until they die. A person can only be stretched so thin. Deryk thought of an elderly woman heâd cared for years ago almost every night.
