I dropped Didi off at her momâs cottage after midnight and watched her bop and jive her way up the front path to the porch, pausing to pull cutesy pop star poses. Sheâd had the time of her life and had thanked me repeatedly after the concert had finished.
It was wonderful to see her this happy, but I couldnât reciprocate. The concert, while glamorous and fun, had set me on edge.
The more I thought about it, the more certain I became that Jeremiah had followed us there. And that it had to do with the notebook. That made keeping it a secret of utmost importance. If Jeremiah found out I had it⦠well, I didnât want to consider what he might do, if he was willing to follow me to a different city at the prospect of me having it.
Once Didi was safely inside her motherâs cottage, I navigated back to my auntâs place.
Iâd left the porch light on and the alarm set. Everything was as Iâd left it, but I was hyper aware of the rustling in the bushes, the gentle tug of the wind on tree leaves, as I let myself into the cottage.
I tapped in the alarm code, then shut the door and locked it.
âBodger,â I called. âIâm home.â
No reply from the kitty in residence. He was asleep or out wandering the street, causing a ruckus or infringing on another catâs territory. Bodger had an old nick in his right earâhe was a scrappy, territorial cat.
I stopped inside the entry hall, clutching my purse in both hands, and listened. The house was quiet, sleepy, even, but I wasnât. I couldnât have gone to bed even if Iâd wanted to.
I showered to freshen up, changed into my comfy PJs, then grabbed the mystery journal and notebook and made for the living room with a cup of chamomile tea. It was time to get down to businessâfigure out what was really cooking in Parfait.
And this time, it wasnât eggs over easy.
I opened the mystery journal Iâd written in a few days ago and paged to where Iâd left off.
âLetâs seeâ¦â
Case Number 2
The Case of the Dead Friend.
Victim Name: Pamela Brooke
Occupation: Unknown.
Age: Approximately 67-years-old.
Time of death: 8:30 p.m..
Cause of death: Unsure. Suspected blunt force trauma.
That was all still true, though I didnât know what the murder weapon wasâa little frustrating. I moved my pen further down the page and filled out my suspect list with renewed vigor. A lot had happened in a short amount of time.
Suspect Listâ¦
Alexei ShawâPamelaâs nephew. Tall enough to have been the hooded figure I saw at the crime scene, and connected to the victim, so there could have been a motive there? But why? What could it be?
Acted strangely the other day when I tailed him along the boardwalk and used the excuse that he was interested in me as a reason he reacted so strongly to my presence in the animal shelter the day after the murder. Not sure I buy thatâs true.
Did not have an alibi for the night of the murder.
