CHAPTER FOUR

Dusty was still sound asleep when Tilly returned to their room, and had no idea what a traumatic ordeal his wife had gone through. Tilly was very calm and woke him up with a kiss.

"Sweetheart, you won't believe what happened to me downstairs. I was abducted."

"That's great, honey. Come to bed,” Dusty said. He was still nauseous from the night's drinking.

Minutes later, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police knocked on the door alongside some special task force members, but they did not allow any reporters inside. They caught Dusty by surprise.

"What's going on?" he asked, his eyes fluttering.

Tilly shrugged her shoulders. “I was about to tell you, honey, but I didn't expect the police to show up so quickly before I had spoken to you.”

“Talk to me about what?”

“There was a robbery at the hotel this afternoon, and they took me as a hostage.”

“What?” Dusty asked. He stared at Tilly and sat in silence for a few moments. “Are you okay? Are you hurt? Please tell me.” Dusty asked, concerned.

“Relax, sweetheart. I’m okay. The bandits used me as a hostage so they could get away. They didn’t hurt me. They left me in a dark alley somewhere downtown. A taxi driver found me and brought me back here.”

Dusty paused and panicked. “Oh, my god,” he blurted out.

The police interrupted their conversation when they interviewed Tilly. She told them everything that had happened, including the taxi driver.

“If it weren’t for him, I don’t know what would have happened to me. It was a dark alley and not a nice neighborhood.”

“Did you get a look at the robbers?” the police officer asked.

“They were wearing masks. I didn’t see their faces. Once I was inside the van, they blindfolded me.”

The police were at a dead end. They didn’t know where to start their investigation. The perpetrators knew the system was down for an upgrade. They turned the cameras off for several hours. The culprits had a clear plan in place, and they were certain it was an inside job. But with no videos or cameras, the robbers have gotten away clean. The criminals knew what they were doing.

“But I got the license plate of their getaway van,” Tilly said.

The police looked at her.

“What? Really?” one of them asked. They may have a potential lead in the case after all.

Tilly gave detailed information to the cops about her abductor’s descriptions—their height, build, and clothing—before they blindfolded her and the make, color, and model of the van. Tilly was assured by the police that all information would be treated as strictly confidential and not released to the media for her protection.

“Please find the taxi driver that helped me. I never properly thanked him,” said Tilly.

“Don’t worry, Mrs. Bonaventura. We will do our best. In the meantime, we will assign a police officer to guard you around the clock until we catch the criminals.”

“I appreciate that, officer,” Dusty said as he escorted them out of the room.

Dusty was pretty shaken up and felt guilty for not protecting his wife.
