âI think you were right to talk to Peter,â Emma said quietly to Cait as they carried the food to the table. âThe police act like they donât care. Theyâre moving at a snailâs pace. We have to get to the bottom of this and clear Jakeâs name as soon as possible. Heâs bringing home the tension at his office, and weâve been fighting far too much lately. I hate it!â
âWe all see it. Have you thought about counseling?â Cait asked.
âI asked him to go, and he said no. He said everything would be fine as soon as the embezzler was found and the company settled down.â She sighed. âBut Iâm not so sure.â
Caitâs heart sank. âEmma?â
Her sister shook her head, signaling with a flick of her gaze that the family was gathering and they didnât have privacy anymore. âLater.â She clamped a hand on Caitâs wrist, though, and leaned close to whisper. âBut any more information you can gather by asking around discreetly would be so helpful. Maybe Sandra Greer or Freddy Hall?â she said, naming two other members of the construction company office staff. âPeople at the office like you. They remember you as the extroverted student body president and girl voted âmost friendlyâ in high school. Theyâre more likely to talk to you than me, seeing as Iâm Jakeâs wife.â
Cait drew and released a slow breath, buying herself a second or two to consider her sisterâs request. âSure. Of course, Emma. I want things resolved for you and for Cameron Glen, too. Iâll see what I can do.â
As the family took their seats around the lunch table, Cait cast a glance toward Matt. She hated to draw him deeper into her familyâs problems, and really hated to give him more fodder for a true crime book that would put the Camerons in the spotlight, but his unbiased observations, his training as an MP and his writerâs attention to detail had already proved valuable.
The family joined hands to say a blessing over the food, and Cait confessed to herself that she also wanted an excuse to spend more time with Matt. She could only hope that her personal desire to get closer to the handsome and charming single father would not come at the cost of her familyâs peace and privacy.
