CHAPTER 11

I felt like I’d pulled the short straw in the job department. I didn’t want to talk to Tina to find out how Connor Townes had ended up at my wedding. I hadn’t wanted her there and certainly hadn’t wanted him there. Now I had to spend more time with the woman to figure out how Connor had ended up coming. Had it been his idea or hers?

Equally unpleasant was the idea of visiting Margaret Twigg, and that was also on the to-do list.

However, in the interests of sleuthing, as Gran would be the first to tell me, best to get the unpleasant task done as quickly as possible and then it’s over with. Which, like so many of those old-fashioned aphorisms, always sounded better in theory than in reality. At least Jennifer was coming with me.

We left the vampire knitting club meeting and, after agreeing to meet back here in the morning, she went upstairs to my old flat. It felt so strange to see her going up to what I still considered was my place. Meanwhile, I headed off into the night with my new husband. “Are you disappointed that we’re not on our honeymoon right now?” I asked him.

He seemed to think about it. “So long as you’re with me, I don’t really mind.” That was such a nice thing to say. Especially since, thanks to marrying me, he was short one very important painting.

I said, “Do you think we’ll ever get that painting back?”

He was silent for quite a few seconds, as if he took my question seriously. I really liked that about him. He said, “Yes. We will.”

I so hoped he was correct.

It was too late to call my mother, so I put that off until the morning, along with thinking how much I didn’t want to talk to Tina. I sent Margaret Twigg a message asking if Jen and I could visit her the next day, and she agreed we could come in the afternoon. She didn’t sound any more enthusiastic to have me visit her than I was to go to her cottage.

“Don’t forget to put your witch’s globe out in the moonlight tonight,” was her final message.
