Jack Young was lifting in his suitcase when he heard footsteps. He turned around, spooked by the sound, and smiled as he saw Will Sandford.

‘Jack, you don’t have to go. I’ve nobody in the cottage till mid-April, so you’re very welcome to stay.’

‘I need to get home, Will. Our daughter’s not handling losing her mum very well, and combined with recently giving birth, it’s overwhelming her. I will have to come back to sort out collecting Faith’s car but if I do I’ll give you a ring and see if the cottage is still free. I hear they’ve found the third body. You take care, Will, because he’s not necessarily only targeting women. I’ve let DI Heaton know what’s happening and he’s got my contact details.’

‘I’ll miss our sharing a four-pack, and I’d appreciate keeping in touch, Jack. Safe journey home, and my best wishes to your daughter and son-in-law and their new family. I’m sure Faith would have been very proud.’

‘That’s the worst part, Will. She would have been proud of the baby, and she never even got to see him. I’m going to make myself a coffee before I set off. Fancy one?’

‘That’s kind of you, Jack, I would.’

Jack locked the car and they walked up the front path and into Leaf Cottage. With the kettle on, Jack busied himself getting out two cups, knowing he was going to miss the cottage owner. They were of a similar age, enjoyed the same sort of films, and Jack appreciated how much Will had been there for him since the discovery of Faith’s body.

Jack made the drinks and handed one to Will. ‘I’ll email you when I get home, but will you promise to email me if anything happens here? Like finding the damn killer?’

‘I will, of course. DI Heaton seems like a smart chap, today’s activities in the village were all down to him, so I hear. And it paid off.’

‘He is smart. They were telling me down at Connection that his wife started off the detective agency with Beth Walters, but Kat’s stopped now because she’s pregnant.’

Will smiled. ‘Let’s hope he’s read her the riot act about not going out on her own, because he’s scared most of the village ladies witless.’

‘I’ve learned a lot while I’ve been here, about this place,’ Jack said. ‘Unique history, hasn’t it? I’ve walked everywhere, had a look at most of the stuff, the graves, the cottages, the stocks. No wonder Faith was so entrenched in it she had to come to see it for herself. I wish I hadn’t persuaded her…’

‘Jack, you can’t blame yourself. She died three days before you even arrived! If anybody feels sorry about the way things turned out, it should be me. I knew she went out on that Monday, and I never checked in with her. I should have.’

‘Why? Do you check in on any other guests when they stay in this cottage?’

‘No, but…’

‘Neither of us can blame ourselves for what happened to Faith.
