Clint
I hate Eric.
That’s all I can think as I try to wash the sticky mess that should have been flan off of my hands. I am not cut out for this shit. I can admit it. I can’t help myself, though. I wanted to do something special since this is the first time I would be hosting a dinner party. I have no experience with this shit, and I feel like a fool.
Meanwhile, Princess Twinkle Toes is floating around the apartment, opening windows and laying the table. Thankfully, he did most of the cooking. It all smells great and looks impressive. The only thing on the table I can easily identify is the rice. He made several dishes that involved a giant wok and an assortment of vegetables that he says I should eat. There is a curry of some sort for the meat eaters (mostly me), but even that is a fucking mystery to me, because Betty Crocker put it in a slow cooker early this morning while I was still sleeping.
“I think I killed dessert,” I announce.
“That’s okay, I am sure Claire will bring cake,” he says.
I can’t believe I agreed to this.
“Sure,” I grumble.
“She is bringing Ali as well. We haven’t had a chance to congratulate them properly on their engagement,” Eric says.
“So what do they want, a cookie?”
“Actually,” Eric says, handing me a little gift box. Inside is an assortment of gourmet cookies. This asshole bought them cookies!
“No fucking way,” I say.
“Just sign the card. I can’t forge your mangled chicken scratches yet,” he says.
I don’t like it, but I do as I’m told. Tonight is about building bridges and holding out an olive branch. Personally, I don’t give a fuck about olive branches, but I don’t think our little world for two is big enough for Eric. It used to be. But that, like everything else, is changing. We both have to face a wider world than the one we built for ourselves, and we are both going to need people in that world. So, I am making an effort to make our tiny circle a little bigger and give Eric the room he needs.
“Hey, you know I love you, right?” he says suddenly, kissing me quickly as he gets glasses out of the cupboard.
“What’s the catch?” I tease.
“Don’t be so cynical, it will give you wrinkles, and then where will you be once your looks fade?”
“Balls deep inside you,” I say with a snicker.
We both share a chuckle and then the doorbell rings. It’s the traitor and her groomer. Ali is all smiles as he comes in. I like the guy. He has shitty taste in women, but there are worse sins than that.
“Well, Clint, you cleaned up nice,” says Claire. I get ready to say something nasty about her dress, but Eric’s pleading eyes make me hold my tongue.
“Thanks, you too,” I say with remarkable indifference. Eric smiles at me from over her shoulder.
“Make yourself at home; we are expecting one more person, and then we can tuck in,” Eric says.
