I hadn’t seen Toby shift, but I’d read the reports. A white wolf and a black wolf had run through the halls sliding and tumbling and falling down the stairs. The black wolf caught the white wolf several times, tipping him onto his back, nipping at his throat and chest.

The reports said the white wolf had then shifted to human, confusing the black wolf. He got up and ran, shifting from human to wolf and then back again, tumbling over and over.

I had known Toby was a rare white wolf. Now, it was confirmed. But that was beside the point.

Report after report came in. Sickening me.

Who was this black wolf? But none of the reports gave a name. Someone had to know. And the security footage of that night was dark and shadowy. The students had sabotaged much of the lighting for their run. Plus, the cameras were old, one more thing on my list of improvements for the academy, budget providing.

I’d left Toby’s side for moments only to shower, shave and dress. To take phone calls outside the room. To consult with the nurses, who all said he was doing well, better than expected, and would make a full recovery.

Mostly, he slept the day away, needing the healing of sleep.

I saw that good meals were brought to him, but he didn’t start eating until dinner.

Now it was time to ask him some more questions. I sat in the chair by his bed.

“Toby, good news. It looks like you’ll be released tomorrow.”

“And I can go to class?”

“Maybe.” It was Sunday, so Toby hadn’t missed any classes today. But he’d already missed some last week and I could see it concerned him.

I sat at his side while he ate chicken, mashed potatoes and green beans. Someone had given him scrubs to wear.

“I need to ask you some more questions about last night.”

“I don’t remember much.”

“I know. But I need to ask. Who organized the indoor run?”

He looked at his plate, swallowing hard. “Not sure.”

“But you have an idea?”

“I don’t want to get people in trouble for my problem,” he said. “It wasn’t right, what happened, but if I get it wrong, it wouldn’t be fair.”

“You almost died.”

“Because of my condition, right?” He glanced up at me, unsure.

I pretended to stare at my tablet. “Who was chasing you?”

“It was dark. He was in wolf form.”

“You didn’t recognize him?”

Toby did not respond.

“Toby?”

“I don’t know.”

Why he would protect such a foolish and potentially violent wolf, I didn’t know. No one else was talking, either. Unfortunately, many had seen Toby’s violent, uncontrolled shifts. Rumors were already rampant and it was going to be hard on him once he got back to class.

The urge to protect him was strong. I kept having ridiculous thoughts of taking him away from here. The worst thing I could be toward him was parent-like. He didn’t need that from me. Dating him was going to be interesting.

I asked him easier questions after that. He told me his actions in detail, as he remembered them, from when he first woke to sounds at his door.
