Chapter Thirty-Two

Dripping.

Sopping.

Kyla Wegman was soaking wet, just a few seconds removed from the shower when the first round of knocking sounded at the front door. Made her jump several inches. Almost sent her toppling over on the wet porcelain of her tub.

On instinct, Kyla felt heart palpitations begin. Felt for certain that the fear she had been with all night was being confirmed. That a mistake had been made and she would have to return to jail.

Grabbing a towel from the rack on the wall, Kyla wrapped it around herself. Let her long hair lay wet against her back. Stood completely silent in the shower.

Hoped the visitor would figure her gone and leave.

Had that thought dashed a moment later by a second round of knocking. No more forceful than the time before, but no less, either.

Whoever it was had no intention of leaving any time soon.

“Just a minute!” Kyla called. Stepped from the shower. Grabbed her robe from the back of the bathroom door and covered herself, cinching it shut across her stomach. Wrapped the towel around her head and left it piled high.

Not the way she would have preferred to meet someone - especially an officer of the law - but it still seemed better than leaving them standing outside all morning.

The previous night had been hard. Long. After Drake had called, she had spent more than an hour crying. Eventually attempted to eat, but found she didn’t have the stomach for it.

Tried watching television. Couldn’t find the required attention span to pull it off.

Shortly before midnight, she had tried retiring to bed. Found her mattress a welcome change from the brick she’d been sleeping on the last few nights, but still couldn’t find rest.

Not until a swallow of the cheap wine she had bought to celebrate her divorce but never actually drank went down was she able to sleep in the slightest. A choppy, fitful rest that barely replenished anything followed by a rough morning, the alcohol having far more effect than any bits of sleep.

By the time the first few streaks of light appeared through her bedroom window, she gave up on it for good. Laced on her running shoes. Took an extra-long run, pushing past the lactic acid, past the icy burn along the back of her throat.

Managed to sweat out the booze in her system. Hopefully any moisture that might try to later turn up as tears.

Despite the hour now fast approaching noon, the interior of her apartment was mostly dark. Blinds pulled. Lights off. Making a haphazard line between them, Kyla turned on as many as she could. Stopped by the coffee table and grabbed up the bottle of wine. Capped it and placed it out of sight.

Noticed the scent of it in the air. Wished there was something she could do to mask it.

A third round of knocking sounded out against the front door, the thin wooden panel rattling slightly, pulling any previous thoughts from mind.

Again feeling the dread rise within her, Kyla crossed over to the small linoleum foyer and opened the door.
