Dalton helped Julia into her seat, then stowed their remaining pack and the bag of dearly bought mushrooms. He pushed the boat back into the water and started the engine. Maneuvering the boat around in the shallows to get them headed back down river took a bit of doing, but Dalton managed it and soon had the boat flying over the water.

He breathed a sigh of relief when they passed the mouth of the narrow creek and saw no bushwhackers waiting for them. Once they’d passed Old Man Tree, Dalton gave the boat full throttle. They had to slow for a few fishermen, but didn’t get stopped by anyone with shotguns or rifles. Dalton remembered hearing Luther tell the person on the phone that Althea had ordered her people to shoot-on-sight.

“Do you think we’re safe now. Julia asked when they’d slowed to pass a boat of men hunting the edge of the river for alligators.

“I think so.” He smiled. “We should be back at the dock in about fifteen minutes. How are you doing?” Dalton reached over and brushed Julia’s arm affectionately.

“I’m beat and I’m worried about Bernard and Terry, but I’m okay.”

When they reached the dock, Dalton floated to the fuel pump to gas up the boat, helped Julia out, and handed her the pack and small cooler to carry to the truck. “Here’s the key. Go ahead and get in. I’ll finish up in the office and be right over.”

“Can I borrow your phone to check in?” she asked him before he walked off.

“Sure.” He handed Julia his phone and went into the office to pay for the fuel. “We’re back, Lenny. I owe you twenty-three-fifty for fuel.” Dalton took out his wallet and handed the older man behind the counter his MasterCard.

“You find what you was lookin’ for upriver?” the man asked after taking the card and swiping it in the cash register. Dalton paused before answering. He didn’t recall telling the man they were looking for anything. Lenny handed Dalton back his card along with the receipt to sign. He scribbled his signature and scooted it back across the counter. “Yep, found it, and then some,” Dalton said with a mischievous grin. Was it possible old Lenny was in Althea’s pocket or a member her Coven.

Before getting into the truck Dalton peeked at the underside and popped the hood. After giving the engine a thorough check, he dropped the hood and climbed in.

“What was that all about?” Julia asked as he buckled his seatbelt.

“Lenny seemed to know we went upriver looking for something. He wanted to know if we’d found it. I just thought I should check the truck for surprises,” he said and smiled. “You get your calls made?”

“No answer at Mom’s,” Julia said with worry, “and I couldn’t remember Tom and Peggy’s number,” she sighed. “That’s the problem with cellphones, you have all the numbers stored in the damned things and don’t put anything to memory. I can remember when I knew everybody’s numbers. Now I barely remember my own.
