Chapter Seven
Jason and Sophie stood at the door waiting to greet the first dinner guests, who were due to arrive any moment. Dressed in an elegantly cut suit, Jason looked devastatingly handsome, his face at its most sardonic as he laid his eyes on Sophie for the space of a few seconds.
She was beautifully turned out in a gown that he had purchased that morning. Her high color was due to temper, not makeup.
Earlier, in their room, theyâd had a flaming row over this very dress, which must have been audible all over the house. Sophie had laid out one of her own dresses, and Jason had sharply vetoed it as too conservative, producing a box from one of the most exclusive dress shops in Kolonaki.
She hadnât wanted to accept such an extravagant gift from him under the present circumstances. Until the status of their marriage was clarified, she refused to be dependent upon him in any way.
By sheer strength of will and iron determination, Jason had coerced her into wearing the dress, saying that he would dress her himself if she did not put it on. Not doubting his word, and fearing the touch of his hard hands on her body while she no longer had the willpower to deny that he could arouse her sensual desires, she had given in, but not gracefully.
Jason whispered in her ear at one point in the evening, âYou look beautiful, Sophie. Iâve been complimented several times.â
Sophieâs teeth set with renewed irritation at the implied reminder that she was a useful and decorative adjunct to his business. She drew her lips back in a brittle smile that anyone watching would have thought entirely genuine. âI hate you,â she muttered through angrily clenched teeth.
His smile mocked her. âKeep it up, darling. No one would ever suspect.â
âWhat would you do if I made a scene?â she whispered.
His eyes turned black and dangerous. âJust try it.â Then someone came up and spoke to him, and his party mask fell back into place so quickly it took Sophieâs breath away.
What an actor the man was. No wonder heâd so swiftly risen to the top in the dog-eat-dog world of international commerce.
Sophie was tired by the time the party wound up after midnight, more a weariness of mind than body. It had been a long time since sheâd entertained on any scale, and sheâd forgotten the effort it took to make sure everyone was happy, that no one felt neglected.
Jason helped her carry glasses into the kitchen, emptying ashtrays into a metal bucket with a tight-fitting lid. He didnât smoke himself and disliked waking in a smoke-scented house, a principle with which Sophie wholeheartedly agreed.
âThe party was perfect, Sophie. I was proud of you.â
She no longer had the energy to argue with him and took the remark at face value. In any case she could detect neither insincerity nor a patronizing attitude behind his words this time.
âThank you, Jason. Iâm glad everyone had a good time.â
âIâm sure they did.
