Chapter 8
The following morning a little past dawn, Bears led the group of men to a clearing and halted. They had left the horses with Dixon so they could move faster, taking only a few hours to sleep, and Bears kept up a relentless pace as he ascended the mountain leading to the pass. “They were here,” he said as his alert gaze took in the scene. The trampled grass. The markings on the ground. The darker area in the dirt at the base of a tree. “I think they spent the night here, which means they aren’t far ahead of us.”
Bears turned to Ben and gripped him by his shoulder as Ben acted as though he would race up the trail. “No, Ben.” Bears’s intense gaze bore into Ben until the distraught man nodded. “You follow my lead, or you go down the trail to wait with Dixon.”
Ben shook his head as he flushed with anger. “Never. I will be there to comfort my wife.”
Bears nodded. “Then you will do as I say. For now, walk with Cailean.”
Cailean had been walking at the back of the group. Ben nodded and moved to stand beside Cailean, although Ben seemed to chafe with the directive.
Bears looked around the clearing once more and shrugged. “There’s little more to learn. Let’s keep moving.”
When they reached a fork in the trail, Bears smiled as he saw a broken branch. “You’ve married an intelligent woman,” he said with a nod to Ben as Bears fingered the branch that would aid them in following the correct trail. He maintained his quick pace up the mountainside, ignoring the exhausted, panting men behind him.
He stopped suddenly and motioned for them to remain quiet and to duck down. He looked behind him to see Cailean and Ewan holding Ben still and nodded his agreement. Bears inched forward, focusing on the man who had Jane tied to a horse.
After a moment, he backed away and motioned for the men to follow him down the mountain a short distance. He spoke in a soft voice. “That man has her tied to a horse. If you go rushing in, you could spook the horse and do untold damage to her as it races away.” His gaze was filled with warning for Ben. “I’ll approach him from behind. In five minutes, I want you to enter the clearing.” He pointed to Ben. “Only you. I don’t want him to realize how many of us there are.”
Bears waited until the men nodded their agreement.
“Bears,” Ewan said as Bears moved to disappear into the forest. “We can wait closer and be nearby if Ben needs us, no?”
Bears shook his head and smiled. “He won’t need you.” With that, he was gone.
