The sound of cackles brought the female knight to wake. Her vision was blurred but she made out fur beneath her, and the sickle-like claws of one of the lizardfolk before her. The rough iron chafed at her wrists, and a smell of cooked meat and oil set her nose wrinkling.

She could taste blood in her mouth.

“Awake?”

Fira tried to push her head up, but something was holding it down. Claws flexed over her scalp. One of the lizardfolk was keeping her hunched over on her knees.

“You kneel before our leader, Chief Warscale. You have not earned the right to set your eyes on him.” She could recognize the deep baritone growl of the larger brute behind her.

“Ease. It will be her duty to look upon me. Let her.” The new voice was calmer, though not gentler.

The pressure at the back of her head was released, and Fira was finally able to look up, eyes slowly coming to focus. Her gaze rose slowly, drawing the lines of scales and muscles of the lizardman in front of her. He was big. His body dominated a throne of stone, fur, and bone. He was reclined though even relaxed his muscles seemed to ripple and bulge. His scales were light, almost white, swirling marks and arcane lines drawn in red paint across his chest and arms.

Chief Warscale wore a loincloth like the rest of his kind though his was made of heavy purple cloth. His tail, decorated with golden rings, wound about the base of his throne. Gold chains lined his chest, connecting two pauldrons made of bone and feather. His posture was regal, even for a human. His reptilian head held high, yellow eyes looking passively down at Fira.

No crown. Even as Fira glared up at him, she couldn’t deny that his silhouette reminded her of her own King Harold.

The human king would be sitting in a tall throne, dressed in red and purple silks, his back straight and his eyes passive, a golden crown studded with rare jewels sitting high upon his brow.

“You killed ten of my bravest warriors, Knight.”

Was that Harold’s voice, or Warscale’s? She shook her head to clear it.

“What is your name?” the lizardman chief’s voice was a like a steady purr, a bit rough, but deep and not as retch-inducing as the others of his kind.

“I will give you nothing, not even my name, lizard scum.” She spat a mix of blood and saliva at his feet.

Something heavy and hard struck her side, sending the woman sprawling across the ground.

“Do not speak to our great chief like that, slave,” the brute growled.

Fira coughed, groaning and trying to right herself. “I’d rather die than be your slave!”

“I would be happy to accommodate you!” The brute raised his club high.

The knight closed her eyes, a smile on her face. At least now, she could join her brothers in arms, dead with dignity.

Death’s cold embrace did not come for her. She peeked an eye open to see the brute halted, the chief’s hand up.
