Chapter 12: Hurt

The headboard is cold against Jarod’s back. His sweat is probably going to stain the wood, but he’s got bigger concerns just now. Gabriel was just kidding, right? He feels stupid enough for falling for it, but even stupider for needing to be told what to believe. Gabriel crawls up next to him with a triumphant half-smile on his lips. He chuckles as he wedges himself into place, pushing his head into the crease between Jarod’s bicep and his shoulder.

“You’re so gullible, Samuels.”

“Fuck off, Anderson.” Jarod stares down at himself, trying to discern whether the redness in his chest is from sex or just good old embarrassment. “Tell me the truth, for once.”

“Give me a minute. You almost killed me.”

“Sorry,” Jarod grumbles. “If I hurt you.”

“A little,” Gabriel admits. “But I like it that way.”

He drags a finger through the stickiness on Jarod’s belly. If it were up to Jarod, they’d have jumped into the shower by now, or at least cleaned up the messier bits with loads of tissue, but Gabriel seems to be enjoying himself, basking in the daze of the afterglow. Gabriel lifts his finger to his mouth and sucks. Parts of Jarod are still angry, but the sight of Gabriel suckling makes other bits of him even angrier. He bites on his bottom lip to stop himself. For now, business. There’s time enough for other things later.

“So you found out I ran away. Who told you? Was it Bennett?”

Jarod nods.

“You’re such a snoop, Samuels.”

Jarod flushes in shame. He wants to know Gabriel. He needs to know everything there is to know about him. Then maybe he can help. Then maybe he can make all of their problems go away. Jarod just wants to be with him. He just – he just wants him.

“I understand why you did it,” Gabriel says. “But next time, maybe just ask?”

“I did,” Jarod says. “About everything. And you never gave me a straight answer.”

Gabriel seems to shrink into the bed at that. “It’s just – none of it is easy to talk about.”

Jarod tugs him in closer, so close that the joined heat of their bodies is nearly stifling. His arm locks around Gabriel’s shoulders. “I’m not going anywhere. And neither are you. We’ve got all night.”

“So you’re a snoop, and you’re bossy.” Gabriel sighs. “Fine. How much did Coach tell you?”

Jarod shakes his head. “Nothing. She didn’t want to say anything.”

“Coach is awesome.” Gabriel stretches and smiles contentedly. “Best mom ever.”

Jarod can only nod. Gabriel isn’t wrong, really. “She said it was your story to tell.”

Gabriel sighs. “Then I guess I’ll tell it. My dad beat me, a lot.”

Oh.

“At first he beat my mom. I tried to help her once, then he just stopped focusing on her. Maybe he knew I could take a punch better, and I was a teenager. Nobody stops to ask why you have a couple of scratches or bruises when you’re a kid. Luther was smart like that. No one at the trailer
