Chapter 31

Warner

I’m in the mess hall sitting with the seniors when I hear a familiar voice. “Hey, Warner,” Audrey says, taking a seat beside me with her food tray. Tonight’s meal consists of grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup.

“Oh, hi, Audrey,” I say, surprised to see her. Audrey and I aren’t exactly close. I talk to her sometimes because she’s the sister of my best friend’s girlfriend, but other than that, I don’t really know her.

“I can’t believe we go home tomorrow already,” she says.

“For sure,” I tell her. “I wish the trip was longer.”

“I didn’t know you two hung out,” my buddy Ryan says to us. He’s sitting across the way, stuffing his face full of grilled cheese.

Audrey and I look at each other and smile. “Uh, sometimes,” Audrey answers.

Yeah, sometimes, I think to myself. So why are you here now?

Audrey spends the entire meal sitting next to me, tearing her grilled cheese into little pieces and nibbling on them as we chat. We talk about football and cheerleading and how our parents seem to not like each other, and even a little bit about her sister and how she’s been doing with Trinity’s death. Audrey is a nice girl and easy to talk to. I can’t understand why Mom thinks that she and Lyla are both rotten. I just don’t see it. Maybe my mom is just worried that if I did date one of them, I’d maybe get married to them and make my mom have to be related to their mom.

At the end of the meal, Audrey’s cheerleading friends—I think their names are Danielle, Sophia, and Olive—come grab her and tell her that they need to go practice.

“Okay, well, I guess I will see you on the field,” Audrey tells me as she gets to her feet.

“See you on the field,” I say. She smiles and waves at me and my friends and then turns and walks off with the girls, her long blonde ponytail swinging behind her.

“That was weird,” I say to the guys.

“Does she have a crush on you or something?” Ryan asks.

I raise an eyebrow. “I don’t think so,” I say. But his question does stir up an idea inside of me: could it be possible that maybe Lyla mentioned something to Audrey about how she has a crush on me? And maybe Audrey only came to talk to me because she was trying to figure out if I liked her back? What if Audrey was simply talking to me because she was trying to play matchmaker?

“You guys should definitely date,” Austin says. “It would be so fitting. You and Jackson would be best friends, dating a pair of twins. It’s cliché and perfect.”

“I don’t know about that,” I say. Unfortunately, Audrey isn’t the twin that I want.

“Why not?” Ryan asks. “She’s cute.”

“You date her then,” I suggest.

“Maybe I will,” he deadpans. Chance and Austin crack up and give him a high five. I shake my head and chuckle, part of my brain still thinking about the possibility of Lyla liking me back.
