CHAPTER 7

Thursday afternoon to Friday morning.

Ida Rose stood on my front porch, waving limply at the limo fading in the distance with her left hand, which lay ensconced inside a large, pink fuzzy muff. It looked like she'd shoved her hand inside a giant wad of cotton candy. At her feet sat an equally pink, round patent-leather overnight case.

“I have always been dependent upon the kindness of strangers.”

“Ida, I've known you for six years.”

She stared at me. “You're supposed to guess!”

I rolled my eyes. “Blanche, Streetcar, of course.”

“Of course!” She beamed happily and darted inside. Vinnie came trotting up to her and sat down on top of her pink-booted foot, rubbing his muzzle against her hip. They shared the proportions of a small child and an Irish wolfhound.

“Wazzup? Where are you going?”

“Why here, of course. I simply cannot stay there.”

“Why not?”

“The ghost!”

“Last night? Did Trixie hear it too?”

She shook her head. “Right after you called, the hospital rang and begged her to work the first half of night shift on account of a sick call.”

Well, that figured. Honestly, if Trixie wasn't still digging herself out of grand mal debt from a previous live-in boyfriend, she'd have had enough money to buy half of Lime Street.

“Look, hang up your coat, make yourself at home. But I’ve got to get going.”

“Another date?”

“No, it's the gender reveal party. I've just iced the cakes but I need to get there by four-thirty to assemble them.” Four thirty! I ran into the kitchen to check the time. The clock on the wall was not my friend. Yikes!

“Look; coffee's in the pot; wine's in a box; help yourself to the fridge; don't let Vinnie out...”

“Cakes!” Ida intoned, drifting into the kitchen after me.

“DO. NOT. TOUCH. THOSE. CAKES.”

“Drat.”

“Here,” I said, thrusting a mixing bowl with left-over icing at her. “Lick this.”

She looked bereft. “It’s empty.”

“I'll make more when I come home. Promise. But please don’t touch the cakes. They're for James' client and I've got to run and change NOW!”

“It’s a cruel world at times. Poor me.” She remained in the hallway, pink coat in one hand, and muff in the other looking perplexed, as if she wondered where the servants were. I sighed, and began to dash down the hall to hang her things up. It was quicker than explaining about my non-existent domestic help.

Suddenly, Vinnie ran full tilt ahead of me and tackled the mysterious pink fuzzy creature swallowing Ida’s hand. Well, at least that's probably what he cogitated inside his kitty cranium. Ida got knocked flat.

“Help! Help! Get him off of me! I'm being devoured!”

I pulled Vinnie off of Ida, but couldn't get him to relinquish the muff. He growled and stood in the hallway, shaking the pink creature vigorously to ensure its demise. I glanced at her outfit: Vinnie was right. She needed updating.

Ida was horrified. “My muff!”

“Vinnie...”

But my cat had other plans. He carried his pink prey down to his basement lair. I hoped I wouldn't find too many pink hairballs in the aftermath.
