Chapter NINE

ANGELA CRINGED AS SHE MADE her way into the boardroom to meet Amara. She was never fond of her after all the confusion with Jackson, and she was dreading this event. The only reason she went along with it was because Jackson was insistent that she be there in his absence. She looked at her watch and realized it was a little past twelve. She was feeling displaced because Jackson and Milan would be away for the next few days.

She walked around the corner to find Amara sitting looking over some photos with Robert and sighed. At least he would be there as a buffer between them. When she took her seat, they looked up and offered her a smile before going back to what they were doing. Within a few minutes, Robert passed her what they were looking at and stood.

“Where are you going?” Angela asked nervously.

“I have some other things to see to. I thought you might be better suited for this. You’re better at layouts and setups than me.”

Angela sighed and nodded her head. She wished he would stay, but she was capable of remaining professional to get the job done. As she flipped over the options, she looked up to find Amara staring at her intently. She looked as if there was something she wanted to discuss. Angela was beyond all the games with her, and to ensure that everything would go smoothly, she decided they needed to clear the air.

“Do you have any questions for me?”

“Quite a few, but let’s start with why you don’t like me.”

“My personal feelings for you are not important.

This is about work, which is why I’m here.”

“How can we possibly get anything done with all this awkwardness between us? We are grown women, and I think we should be able to get into this.”

“If you really want to get into it, then we can,” Angela answered bluntly. “I don’t trust you. I don’t trust you as far as the business is concerned among other things.”

“Let’s be real Angela. You don’t trust me around Jackson. I can’t say that I blame you. I hurt him, but I want to make up for all that. I love him.”

Angela wasn’t sure why, but the hostility she had begun to melt. She felt sorry for the pathetic woman sitting before her. “I don’t want to get into your business with Jackson, but you have to know that he has moved on. He is happy where he is. I’m afraid I don’t see that changing soon.”

“As a woman, if you were in love with someone for three years, could you just give him up without a fight?” “If he was no longer mine, there is nothing worth fighting for. You’re a beautiful girl, and you will find love again. I just don’t think it will happen with Jackson.”

Angela’s words seemed to have hit their mark because Amara was sitting back with a look of defeat written all over her face. Angela felt terrible for having to tell her what should have been obvious to everyone, but someone had to.
