Chapter Thirteen
I distracted myself with a book while I waited. I was getting into the story just as my front door opened and I heard Lucas’ voice carry inside. I tried not to squirm as I adjusted my position on the armchair in the front room, all the while, staring at the book in front of me.
None of this was fair. I wanted so badly not to have any feelings for Lucas but my head and body didn’t seem to want to listen because as soon as I saw him step into the house, my heart took off galloping.
I swallowed as I stared hard at the words, trying to figure out what they were saying. How did I forget how to read in ten seconds flat?
“Hey, Charlotte.” Lucas’ voice made my stomach lighten and my whole body heat up.
“Hey,” I managed as I raised my hand in his direction. And then I felt like an idiot. What was my problem?
“I’ll grab us some water and then we can get started,” Dad said.
Oh, right. Dad was in the room. I hadn’t even noticed.
“Sure, Mr. Robinson.”
I kept my gaze on my book, but every one of my senses was focused on Lucas and what he was doing. First, he fidgeted a bit. Then he wandered over to look at a few photos on the wall. And then, he walked over to me.
“What are you reading?” he asked, dipping down to study the front of my book.
I shrugged as I slammed the book closed and tucked it next to me. “It was my mom’s.” In truth, it was one of those cheesy romances that made me sigh. For some reason, I didn’t want Lucas to know that I actually enjoyed reading them.
His eyebrows were raised as he stepped back. “Sorry,” he muttered.
Regret flooded my body as the tone of my voice and the meaning behind shutting the book and hiding it raced through my mind. Not wanting to hurt him became priority one. “I mean, my mom liked to read this one,” I said, grabbing the book and holding it up for him to see.
Wow. I seriously changed moods faster than a NASCAR racer shifted gears.
He studied the cover and then glanced over at me. I could see there were questions he wanted to ask and I wasn’t sure if I wanted him to do that.
Thankfully, Dad walked in with two water bottles and handed one to Lucas who thanked him as he took it. Dad told him they should get started and just as quickly as Lucas had come in, he was gone.
As the front door shut behind them, I let out the breath I’d been holding, grateful that I’d managed to hold it together while he was here. I was in some serious trouble if I didn’t get my feelings under control.
I scooted down on the chair until my feet were resting on the coffee table and I was able to rest my book on my chest as I read.
An hour ticked by before the door opened and I pulled my attention up from my book.
