Chapter 9

Everett

Mid-way into the supper dance, Everett was pleased to dance with May as the group changed partners again. She seemed to float in his arms. After the close of this dance, they’d go to the midnight supper. Would it be possible to sneak off with May in all the confusion? He hoped so.

“Let go of her.” Simon nudged Everett from behind as he promenaded with May.

Everett had been so lost in his thoughts, they’d missed exchanging partners and now the set was in disarray with one man partnerless and Simon having two. Everyone was standing about, trying to see how to fix the mess. They had finally figured out who should be where when the music stopped.

Everett escorted Lucy into the midnight supper. Since they had been partners for that dance, they were constrained to be partners at the dinner that followed. Henry was right behind him with May, and Simon and Cora behind them. As host and hostess, the Duke and Duchess of Hertfordshire would lead the procession into dinner. Before they reached the door, Simon and Cora stepped to the front of the halted crowd to take the lead. Everett breathed more easily than he had for the past half hour. Simon was a friend, but he was also a pest. He seemed intentionally keeping Everett and May apart, or at least under close surveillance.

When the friends crossed through the threshold to the dining room, Simon and Cora stepped in behind the little group.

“Oh, look. The duke and duchess will eat with us,” Everett said to Henry with exaggeration.

“We always sit together,” Simon replied. “I somehow enjoy your company.”

Everett had always valued his friendship with Simon, but tonight, he was hoping for different company—not Simon and Cora and not Miss Lucy Radnor.

Simon led the little group to the table where Everett and Henry seated their partners together. Simon seated Cora on Everett’s other side. The men went to the buffet to get the dinner plates.

As Everett was dishing a few carrots, he leaned over to Henry and whispered, “When we get back to the table, I wondered if you would like to trade spots.”

Henry looked over his shoulder as if he were nervous that Simon had heard it. “Yes. If we get back before the old man there, we could make the switch.”

Both Everett and Henry hurried through the line, not even waiting for the rolls to be placed before they hurried off to the table. Everett felt like he was racing and sitting beside May would be the prize. Both men placed their plates down and took seats beside the wrong woman. Which was all right with Everett. May’s smiling face lifting toward him was the reward he’d hoped for.

Without even glancing at the plate, she said, “This might be the best supper I’ve ever had.”

Everett was pleased to offer it to her. The whole dining room seemed to turn invisible in those moments, until he stepped in front of his own seat to sit down. Then the chair truly disappeared.
