Chapter Eleven

RENAE

The day dawned bright and sunny, perfect for exploring my surroundings. Donning shorts and top, slathering myself in sun cream, pulling on a pair of sneakers and a hat, I headed out before the temperature reached an expected top of ninety-six degrees.

I was aware there were twelve cottages on the farm, each being private and secluded on their own individual acre of land. They could be seen in passing, but I assumed anyone residing in one was probably in need of solitude and privacy. I would not disturb them.

Although Sprucewood held its share of large festivals, they were mainly structured around public holidays such as the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year. Smaller festivals included harvest time and incoming spring.

Markets were held monthly and the next one was due to be held on Saturday in a week’s time, according to flyers displayed in windows around town.

Tucking my keys into a pocket and keeping my cell phone in hand, I set off toward the river.

The slightly long grass, luscious and green, waved back and forth in the soft, warm breeze. Birds chattered in trees overhead. Some sounded as if they were involved in an argument if the way they screeched at each other was any indication. Different bugs hung in the air, most captured in spider webs, while lizards or other small animals could be heard scurrying away as I approached.

Emerging into a large clearing after having walked for almost half an hour, I indulged in the sight which revealed itself before me.

The tall mountains were capped with a dusting of snow, while the steep sides were green with fresh spring grasses and colorful wildflowers. The river meandered it’s way along, finally disappearing from sight around a bend below where I stood.

Switching my phone on, I swiped to the camera app. and snapped off a few pictures from different perspectives–some closeup, others panoramic. After soaking up the scenery and watching the sun’s rays dance on the sparkling water, I began the descent down to the riverbank.

On the sandy shore, a number of kayaks were lined up, and each had oars placed inside. I had read on the internet site that the vessels were for use by those renting the cottages.

A large metal cabinet nearby was pasted with a sign which drew my curiosity and I made my way over. The sign indicated life jackets in various sizes were placed inside for use with a kayak. The only request was the jacket was permitted to dry before being placed back inside.

Off to my right, upstream, a bridge crossed the river from one side to the other and railway tracks were visible at the base of the mountain. To my left, after running in an ‘s’ pattern, the river disappeared from sight. Sandy beaches, such as the one I currently stood on, graced the banks in several places. With the warm weather bordering on hot, I had no doubt I would be pulling on a swimsuit and taking advantage of the inviting cool water.
