“That was an accident. Someone’s foot must have slipped off the brake pedal.”
“Yeah, right. And the sky’s really made of window-cleaning fluid. When it falls down, it corrodes brains.
That’s what must’ve happened to yours.”
“Lame, J.Z.” She shook her head. “I guess that guy really did scare you.”
“I’d hate to have my prime suspect turned to roadkill by one of her pals.”
“One of my pals! What are you talking about?”
“Yeah, J.Z.,” Dan said. “What are you talking about?”
He ran a hand through his hair. He hadn’t wanted to tell Maryanne about his new assignment, but circumstances had changed. “That phone call I took?”
Dan nodded.
“It was Eliza. Seems an informant says there’s a contract out on Maryanne. Somehow, some way, Laundromat’s pals learned about Maryanne—her e-mails, the fingerprints on the IV stand. They know we’re investigating her, and there’s been some rumbling about her part in his death.
To put it in plain English, his ‘family’ isn’t happy she took Papparelli out. So Eliza’s pulled me off the investigation itself. She wants me to keep Maryanne under wraps.”
Maryanne gasped. “Do you mean what I think you mean?”
“Yeah. Your mob pals aren’t so happy with you. There’s word that they want to take you out. For good, not on a date.”
“I don’t have mob pals—unless you think Carlie’s in on

her late husband’s deals. But from what I’ve read, the mob’s really a man’s thing. They’re awfully chauvinistic and tend to keep women out of the loop.”
So that’s what those books she’d bought were about.
“And you’re indignant about it.”
Her gaze bored right into him. “Discrimination is dis-crimination. It should tell you something.”
“Good golly, Miss Molly. Lookee what we got us here.
An equal-opportunity gun moll on a suffrage campaign.
How special!”
The color came back to Maryanne’s face. “You really are crazy,” she said, her natural spark back in full flame.
“You’re the one who is absolutely, positively certain I’m some kind of hit woman. And now you’re making fun of me because I pointed out another reason why I can’t be the person you think I am.”
“Okay. So you’re not on a crusade for equal rights for gangsters.” It was the best he could do to cover his surprise.
She did have a point. The mob suffered from a gender gap.
“Goodbye, J.Z.” She turned toward her car. “Thanks for the hug. You almost had me fooled. For a minute there I thought you might be human after all.”
“Hang on!” He reached out and caught her hand. “Not so fast. Remember when you called me Shadow?”
She stared at their joined hands.
He let go.
“Thank you,” she said, her voice icy cold. “Yes, I remember.”
“I’m now your official shadow. So…that being said, you’re stuck with me. And we can give the environment a break if we only take one car.”
“You have got to be kidding.”

“I’ve never been more serious in my life.”
“You’re tagging along on my Pygmalion adventure?”
“Pygmalion’ s kind of outdated. ‘The rain in Spain falls—”
“‘Mainly on the plain.’ My Fair Lady’ s one of my favorite movies, but you’re no Rex Harrison.
