Rick Ricci was about to give up and at least go get something to eat when the door of the house opened. He’d parked the Jeep down the road a bit and then walked back to the van. He’d scented Synde at the van, so he was in the right place at least. He popped the back door of the van and settled in to wait.

And wait.

The door opened, and four men came out. One he recognized immediately, Stefan Lebenev. Was Stefan in on this? He shook his head. No that wasn’t possible. For three years, he had made Lebenev his project. He knew the man — all too well, actually. Arrogant, single-focused, clueless about people, and able to ignore anything that didn’t fit his personal narrative? Yes, he was all of that.

But he was also a good man. Rick didn’t really know how else to put it. Stefan truly wanted to make the world a better place for shifter girls. Why girls? He didn’t know. He’d heard bits and snatches, but Lebenev could have focused on anything. But it would have been something that made the world better. Shifter girls just happened to be the beneficiaries of his single-minded drive.

The notion that Stefan would collude with others to sell the serum to humans for wealth was laughable. Anyone who had spent even a minimal amount of time with the man would know that.

That settled in his mind, he wondered what the doctor was up to. Because clueless didn’t begin to cover Stefan Lebenev’s inability to deal with people.

They were actually polar opposites, Rick thought with a mental laugh. Lebenev had principles, but no charm. Rick had charm but no principles.

He listened to see if he could pick up anything. What was Lebenev up to?

Pack bonds, he thought suddenly. He’d persuaded them to come out to the van so he could reach his pack bonds. Good job.

Of course, this was going to expose him here shortly. Rick grimaced. If someone was going to die, it wouldn’t be him. He let his hands begin to change into claws. He’d heard that Abby could do that too — the joke was she could do a lot of the things she did because no one had had the time to tell her they were impossible.

“So you’re willing to be the test subject for this?” Lebenev said loudly. Really loudly. Rick frowned, then realized he’d seen the pack Jeep and recognized it. Lebenev knew someone was around. It was always a pleasure to work with a smart man. “You realize there’s a risk, right?”

“You’ve been conducting the trials on humans for two years, Doctor,” a man said impatiently. “Hardly much risk left is there?”

“There’s always a risk,” Lebenev said. “I’ll need to get a bunch of things out. This would be so much easier if you’d allowed me to have my people work on this. For the kind of money you’re offering, at least one or two of them would be more than willing to take you up on this.
