Chapter 15

Maverick pulls into the driveway at the lake house. He soon reverses out at the sight of all the vehicles crammed onto the driveway and parked haphazardly all over the grass. We park a little way down the dirt lane leading up to the lake house and walk back up the slope. On the way up I notice a white van that is hidden just behind the trees.

Dario drives a white van.

It's too dark to see the license plate clearly so I'm not sure if it's his van or not. But I wouldn't be surprised if he's here. Parties mean business for people like him. I haven't seen him since that day he walked out of my dorm room just over two months ago. I haven't even seen Mitchel hanging about either. I wanted to ask him about my sister and what the hell he was doing in Nebraska when I was there, but we haven't crossed paths since. I did do a little snooping on Facebook to check up on my sister and she's still engaged and hasn't left Nebraska, so I'm guessing no one else knew about Mitchel's little trip over there. Another little lie my sister is keeping hidden.

I start climbing the porch steps, but I barely make it two steps before Mav takes my hand and pulls me to a stop.

"What's wrong?" I ask.

He steps up onto the step just below me, so we are nearly the same height, but he's still got a few inches on me.

"It's just uh, Ethan's probably going to be pretty drunk already and he can get a little bit out of hand." he warns.

"Okay?"

"Sometimes he says things,"

"What kind of things?"

"You know, random crap that doesn't mean anything, but he'll say it anyway just to cause problems but it’s all crap."

"So, what you're saying is, whatever Ethan says I shouldn't take it too seriously?"

"Pretty much."

"Well, I'm not here to see Ethan, so I doubt we'll even get a chance to talk."

Maverick nods his head as though he's pleased with my response and I just let it go and kiss him. He leads me up the steps and through the open front door and into the living room. There are people everywhere. It reminds me of the last time I was here back in September when Maverick invited me over. The only difference is someone has gone overboard with decorations this time. There's a New Year's banner hanging from the ceiling, fairy lights hung up on the walls, and there's even purple and silver tinsel wrapped around the lamps and staircase.

"Who did all this?" I say loudly to Maverick so he can hear me.

"Probably Addie."

"It looks good."

Maverick pulls me into the kitchen, holding onto my hand and keeping me partially hidden from view. The kitchen doesn't look any different, with New Year's decorations hung up on the cupboards and hanging from the ceiling. I can hardly see the countertops with the amount of alcohol and red cups covering the surfaces. I break free from Mav’s vice-grip and help myself to some chips and dip.
