CHAPTER NINE

As she stepped out of the shower, Allie heard a knocking at the front door. The insistent knocking continued.

Luke hadn’t come back from the home visits yet, so he couldn’t answer. And she didn’t want Molly to hear the racket and come out to check. Allie wrapped a towel around her hair. She pulled on her housecoat and tightened the belt. She padded toward the door in her bare feet.

Who could it be? Patients usually phoned. The knock became a loud pounding.

She hesitated a second wishing for the peep hole her apartment in New York had. Opening the door she found herself facing Didi Malone.

The bleached blonde hair, pulled back into a ponytail, exposed several inches of the dark roots. Her painted red lips pursed together. Wearing a leather jacket, skintight jeans and a black tank top that did little to hide her enhanced bust, her fist raised, she glared at Allie.

“So they were right about you moving in here. What the hell do you think you’re doing? He’s mine. I told you that. Leave him alone and get out of his house. Got it?”

“Sorry?”

“Don’t you sorry me. Just get your skinny butt out of here.”

“It’s Didi right?”

“You’re damn right it’s Didi.” Grasping Allie’s arm she dug in her long, red nails, and squeezed. “I suggest you get dressed and be out of here within the damn hour. I’ll be back to make sure you’re gone. Trust me. You don’t want to get in a fight with me. I can take you down. And if you know what’s good for you, you might keep going and leave town.”

Allie yanked her arm from Didi’s grip. The terrycloth had kept the nails from breaking her skin, but she’d probably still have a bruise. It would match the one Dalton had given her.

“Look, Ms. Malone, don’t threaten me. I’m here at Dr. Hawkins’ invitation. I think you should be having this conversation with him, not me. I’m not sure he wants to lose a doctor at the clinic right now. I suggest you leave immediately.” She tried to shut the door.

Didi shot her foot into the space.

“Look, bitch, I want you out of here, one damn way or another.”

“As I said, you should discuss this with Dr. Hawkins. You and I have nothing more to discuss.” Kicking Didi’s foot out of the way, Allie slammed the door and turned the lock. Leaning against the solid oak frame she took a deep breath, trying to stop the trembling.

Eventually she moved to a window and peeked out through the curtain. A battered old car drove away from the curb.

A sigh escaped through her lips. At least that woman had gone. If she came back in an hour, Luke should be home. Didi obviously didn’t have a key or she wouldn’t have knocked, so she wouldn’t be able to break in. She’d talk to Luke about her when he got home.

“Are you okay, Allie?”

She spun around to see Molly standing in the living room doorway, her lower lip trembling.
