Part Two

Chapter Nineteen-

When Liam opened his eyes, he was sitting on a bench in an empty park. He recognized the place immediately: the pond, the willow trees, the rusty swings, the winding path around the water. Everything was quiet. There was no wind, no movement. Liam felt absolutely at peace.

After a moment, someone sat next to him on the bench. Liam didn’t even have to look to know who it was. He grabbed Cameron’s hand without saying a word.

“So, this is it, huh?” Cameron asked.

Liam rested his head on Cameron’s shoulder. “Hm?”

“This is your idea of peace? Just a bench in an empty park?”

“Empty except for you,” Liam pointed out.

“So, why this place?”

Liam sat back up right and shrugged. “I don’t know. I guess that nothing bad has ever happened here. Not like at home, not like at your place… It’s the only place I can think of where everything has been happy. Remember how, when we were little, my dad would bring us here to feed the ducks? We would give them the leftover bread from our hotdog buns. And remember the time that your mom brought us here to play on the swings, and we found that weird orange caterpillar and we kept it in a jar? What did we name him? It was something stupid for a caterpillar, like John or Jim… Or was it Thomas?” Liam laughed a little.

“You sure have a funny way of looking at things,” Cameron said. “The bread probably caused a lot of stomach problems for those ducks, and we definitely killed that caterpillar by keeping it in a jar.”

“But neither of us thought like that at the time,” Liam told him. “We were too innocent to know about things like getting sick and dying. I just want to go back to that.”

“We can’t, Liam,” Cameron said firmly.

Liam sighed and took his hand back, folding his hands in his lap instead. “We can’t do anything,” he said, feeling defeated.

“That’s not true. You know what we can do? We can make new memories, find a new perfect place for ourselves.” Cameron grabbed Liam’s hands and gave him a serious, determined look. “We don’t have to give up. We can’t give up.”

Liam shook his head. “I don’t understand.”

“This isn’t it, Liam,” Cameron told him. “Pull yourself together again. I know you can. You’re stronger than you think. You’ve been fighting for all your life, but you’re not fighting alone anymore. Okay?”

Liam nodded. “Okay,” he said, “but what about you?”

“I’ll be right there next to you, recovering right there with you. Now, let’s get going. I don’t see many ducks around here, and it’s gonna get dark soon.” Cameron stood, then helped Liam up. He held Liam’s hand as they started down the winding path near the water, together.
