After changing out of our wet clothes we headed out for lunch. There was only one table left on the deck of the Stone Oven and we snagged it. We settled in and ordered a bottle of Veuve and a Windswan Deluxe pizza – which featured homemade mozzarella, local sausage, and arugula.

“This is definitely too fancy for Windswan.” Lucy sipped her sparkling water while we waited for our champagne. The server arrived at the table with a bottle that was already beading with condensation. The young girl’s hands shook as she peeled off the foil and undid the little wire things.

“Sorry.” She smiled. “I’ve never done this before.” She looked like she was about eighteen years old, with a stack of friendship bracelets up her arm and her nails painted a bright green.

“Do you need a hand?” A man from the table next to ours took the bottle from the wide-eyed server’s hands. “Do you mind?” he asked.

“No. Go ahead.” There was relief in her voice.

“That’s fine sir,” Lucy drawled and batted her eyes. The guy looked to be about fifty, a real silver fox type. He was wearing Sperry topsiders and a Ralph Lauren sweater. He looked like he’d just stepped off a sailboat, but Windswan Lake wasn’t really known for sailing – unless it was a tiny dingy. The man draped a napkin over his arm and eased the cork out of the bottle.

“Ma’am.” He poured Lucy’s glass first. She drew her fingertips to her cleavage, something she did subconsciously, or so I thought, when she was attracted to someone.

“Don’t you dare call me ma’am.” Lucy’s sassy side was coming out – she was definitely attracted to this man – who was old enough to be her father.

The man poured my glass. “Well, then Miss. What should I call you?” A slight Texas twang hung behind his words.

“Lucy. And this is my cousin Hollie.”

The man smiled, the crinkles beside his eyes a telltale sign that he did it often. “Pleased to meet you Lucy and cousin Hollie. I’m Laird.” I raised my eyebrows slightly and Lucy kicked my foot under the table.

“Pleased to meet you, Laird. Should we call you over when we need a refill?” Lucy looked up at him as she sipped the champagne.

Laird chuckled and I wondered if he was used to women as bold as Lucy. “It would be my pleasure, Miss Lucy.” He gave a butler’s bow. “I’ll leave you two to your afternoon. Enjoy Windswan Lake.”

He returned to a table with three other men who also looked like they’d stepped off a yacht. “What’s happened to this place?” I mused. The champagne tickled my throat and I coughed into my napkin.

“I don’t know, but maybe I’ll stick around a little longer.” Lucy looked over her shoulder at Laird. In turn, he held up his rocks glass.

“He’s got to be in his fifties.”

“Who cares?” Lucy shrugged. “If you did any dating, you’d know that guys our age are terrible.”

“I date.”

The pizza arrived at our table and looked like it had been delivered straight from Italy.
