"You eat like an animal, Beverly." I take another bite of my burger, smiling at my mother with my full mouth making Julian chuckle next to me.

Swallowing the bite and picking up the last fry off my plate I point it at her. "You raised me."

Her lips purse, fork pointing at me as I shove my fry in my mouth. "I know you're not insinuating that I taught you to shovel your food down like a little piggy, young lady."

I shrug as Julian pipes up from my side, "Well, Dad didn't." His comment has us both giggling over our near empty plates, making Mom huff from across the table.

"You two aren't my children. I don't know where you came from because my children wouldn't treat me like this." Setting her fork onto the table, she wipes at her mouth, scowling at us over the napkin. "We need to go get your dress, Beverly, so hurry it on up."

Julian and I share a look, both of us pushing from the table to stand at the same time. I watch as Mom digs around in her giant purse looking for cash. "We're done. But I don't see why we need to do this now, I can pick the stupid thing up any time. The wedding is two months away."

Much to my delight, I was chosen to be part of the mysterious Viva's wedding party by the wonderful Francesca Luciano herself. Meaning, I can't get out of it, even if I tried. Her reasoning being that I've been such a good friend to her son over the years. I almost puked when I found out, hurled all over her fine china at the stupid brunch she shared the news at. I had planned on ditching out, taking a plane and skipping the whole thing. But now I'm forced to participate in everything. Every brunch, every party, every fitting. Every single. Fucking. Thing.

"Knowing you, you'd wait until the day before and you need to have it fitted." She tuts around as she sets the money on the table, adjusting the mid-length sapphire dress she's wearing around her knees as she stands. "And Viva will be there getting her own fitting today, it'll be a good chance to meet her."

I feel the grimace splicing across my face and don't even try to stop it. I don't want to meet Viva. I don't want to make small talk or pretend I'm happy for her. I don't want to fuss over her dress or compliment her hair. I don't even truly know her now and I want her gone, preferably anchored to the bottom of the bay with a sack of bricks.

"Do you want me to come?" It's Julian who asks, his hand rubbing over the top of his short hair as he eyes Mom. I'm sure he knows how much I don't want to be doing this. I haven't told him, but I never have to. I'm also starting to think I'm the only one who's been in the dark about Remy all these years considering no one ever bats an eye at our behavior.
