Our group of friends were drinkers, but not the sloppy kind. We all knew how to handle ourselves, but that night, I had a bit too much. Todd took advantage and ordered several shots throughout the night. He was a big guy, and there was no way I could partake in as many as he did. Plus, we were secretly doing them. It wasn’t the shot type of crowd. Courtney would be horrified, but her husband James was our scapegoat. That was why he had them poured in lowball glasses to put on airs.

Later that evening, I was feeling good. The party was getting lively, and the dance floor was full. My friends left to dance, and I stayed at the bar, talking to some people I had just met. Austin always took his time with the children before changing out of his costume to work the room for donations. Everyone loved talking to him. He was very charismatic and could talk on any subject.

Even though I couldn’t see him, I felt when he was near.

There was a magnetic pull when Austin and I were in the same room. I always knew when he was around. We both had this sick sense regarding the whereabouts of the other. Even when I tried to ignore him, our eyes would always meet. Unspoken words were often said, and many revelations of our connection were discovered that way.

The DJ slowed down the music and invited couples to the dance floor.

The soulful music caught my attention, along with Austin’s dark gaze. I watched as he walked toward me from across the room. His hand slid around to my lower back as he swayed to the music.

“Dance with me.”

I shook my head to protest, but he grabbed my hand and walked us to the dance floor.

He was breaking the rules.

I glanced around, wondering if anyone would notice, but it was Austin—everyone noticed.

Stepping closer, he wrapped my hand around his neck and began to sway to the provocative music. I laughed at the lyrics’ hints about friends being lovers. I felt every beat of my heart slow down with each unhurried step. Having him close calmed me. Breathing him in was like aromatherapy for my soul.

Nothing was said as we danced slowly.

When the music stopped, we found our own tune. We didn’t want it to end, but I released first, and he reluctantly followed. We walked to the bar, and he ordered me a glass of wine.

“That was...different,” I said, taking my glass and turning toward the dance floor. My eyes swept across the room as I tried not to attract attention. I met several glares.

Austin faced me. “Different is good. We need to do something different more often.”

I swallowed the remainder of the sweet wine and nodded.

He chuckled, then I felt his fingers brush down my arm.

“This is going to happen,” he murmured.

I looked straight ahead, trying to ignore the burn from his touch and the spark that ignited from his words.

When someone came up and introduced themselves to Austin, I took the opening and slid away.
