You don’t want to stir this pot.
What could Ryan possibly mean? Kate looked at the time stamp. He texted twenty minutes ago. She wondered why the message hadn’t been delivered immediately. Probably had to do with whatever Internet site he was using. Kate held up her phone and waggled it at Tim. He responded with two fingers in the air as he mouthed two minutes.
Kate rounded the building, pressing her quick dial for home. The call rang until the answering machine engaged. “Hey, Ryan. It’s me. I guess I missed you.” Kate said as she walked down the sidewalk into the garden. “I’m trying to figure out what I’ve done wrong. Did I do something - or not do something – that’s upset you?” Kate saw the portly form of Senator Tredegar Orly in the distance, and heard someone yelling angry words at him. “If I did, I’m sorry. I’d like to talk it through with you.” Kate sidled up to a tree and peeked around. She saw Custis Scarborough punctuating his diatribe by jabbing a finger at Senator Orly’s chest.
Even from this distance, she could tell Custis had whipped himself into full fury. “I’m at a funeral right now, baby. I’ll call you later. I love you - never forget that.”
Kate pushed the end button as she crept toward the rhododendron bush. She wished she could make out what Custis was saying, but the wind blew the conversation the wrong way. The words that Kate picked out were “uranium,” “The hell I will,” and “governor.” Kate moved closer to see Senator Orly was red-faced and mopping his brow. It seemed to her that the men were about to come to blows. She pressed number three on her phone.
“What have you got?” Tim asked.
“Get to the garden right now. Hurry.” Over the phone, she heard the sanctuary door squeak open, then bang. Tim’s breath was in the phone.
Seconds later, “I don’t see you.”
“I’m over by the bushes, but you should…oh, no.” Kate leapt forward, sprinting toward the men. Senator Orly had pulled something from his pocket, and then dropped to his knees. As Kate ran the last few steps, Tim’s hand was on her back.
