THE BEAST PACED THE cave. Hate rolled through it, bringing on a strong urge to hunt. It plunged into the icy waters of the lake and headed for the nearby shore.

Chapter Thirteen

As if Mom heard me, she turned. But my parents were no match for the red-eyed four-legged demon. “Mom,” I whispered again before blackness descended.

Someone chanted in a language I didn’t understand. A pillow smelling of herbs and grasses supported my head. I forced my eyes open. I turned my head toward the flame.

Pieces of my parents littered the ground. A deep hole gaped in my mother’s chest where her heart should’ve been. This time I didn’t try to fight the unconsciousness that claimed me, reality too unspeakable to bear.

The scent of the forest enfolded me. It exuded a sharp pungent scent of pine...and fear.

Something thumped heavy and fast beneath my ear. Warm arms encircled me. I looked into Kylar’s alarmed face.

“What the hell did you give her, Jimmy?”

“Knowledge,” the old man responded simply.

The picture of my parents torn to bits drifted to the back of my mind like the vague remnants of a nightmare. Even as I fought to repress the memory, my body shuddered.

Before he could say anything else to the old man, I asked in a voice that was little more than a whisper, “What are you doing here?”

“I heard you,” he said flatly.

“You were still on the porch?”

He hesitated for a fraction of a second. “Maybe I should say I sensed you were in trouble. Doug and I were walking along the lake shore.”

A puma could have heard the high pitch wail. I could have heard it. Even inside the house, I could hear the wild rhythm of the waves.

The room spun. I closed my eyes.

“She isn’t ready for this.” Kylar growled. His voice rumbled in his throat.

“You know she is. That’s why you brought her here. You also know this knowledge is necessary to save her. The demon’s existed for centuries. Each Minder’s death makes it stronger. She has the means to destroy it. She must, before it destroys her.”

I felt the featherlike touch of Kylar’s lips on my forehead. Comfort and sexual energy shot through me. Why did he affect me this way?

“Touch your necklace,” he murmured.

My arm felt heavy. I forced it up. My fingertips brushed a warm polished stone. Comfort, sweet as Kylar’s lips, traveled through me. Reluctantly, I left Kylar’s arms and sat up. His hands dropped to his sides, his face stiff.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have brought you here.”

“No, Jimmy’s right. I needed to know.” A shudder passed through me. I touched the necklace and ratcheted up my comfort level, fighting back the horrific image of my poor parents.

“How did you know to bring me to Jimmy?” I searched his face and frowned in confusion.

He rose to his feet and helped me to mine. “Doug and I met in college. We discovered we were...connected.” He hesitated as if looking for the right word. “Distantly. I was interested in legends. We exchanged life stories.
