ROSARIO BLANCANALES DROPPED Heidi and turned to fight. The Colima-style machete in his hand was a working tool. The deeply patinaed, twenty-seven-inch blade was paddle-shaped and sharpened on both sides.

The Vulcanos were almost upon him. Several of the ones he had shot had shown the good taste to fall. Others had not joined the chase at all and three were staggering far behind. Blancanales had called it right. The fight would be ten to one.

They raised their machetes high and called upon the lord of evil. There were ten of them, and they were young men, but they were farm boys. They had swung machetes all their lives, but in the relatively peaceful Gorda region of Mexico, Blancanales would have bet that none of them had ever been in a machete fight, or any other kind, for that matter. Blancanales was a warrior, and had fought battles on every continent on Earth; anything with a blade was living lightning in his hands. The Vulcanos raised their machetes high as if they were going to behead an ox.

The Able Team warrior launched into them.

The primary target in any fight with a blade was the opponent’s blade. The lead Vulcano swung for Blancanales’s head. The Stony Man veteran swung at his opponent’s hand. Fingers flew and the machete sailed away into the grass. Blancanales’s back swing bit into his opponent’s neck. He ripped the blade free and thrust over the falling man’s shoulder into the throat of the one behind him.

Blancanales found he had another advantage. Winter said people on Vulcan would display behavioral malfunctions. The Vulcanos were literal slaves to their programming. They did not work in concert or try to circle him. Each moved straight forward and they stacked up like a herd as they individually followed their instruction to kill their enemy.

Blancanales backpedaled and jinked right in an admirable Ali shuffle. The eight remaining Vulcanos shifted formation like a school of mackerels. Blancanales kept circling right and then suddenly broke into a sprint. The Vulcanos shouted and chased.

Blancanales spun.

He was now uphill from them. The Able Team operative lashed out and took a hand clean off and dropped low to filet the kneecap. The Vulcano fell and his fellows unblinkingly trampled him to get to Blancanales. One stumbled and Blancanales lunged in, swinging his machete like a tennis racket. His forehand almost took the tumbler’s head clean off.

Blancanales nearly paid for it with his life. Another Vulcano swung with the strength of the mindless. The Able warrior brought up his machete to block and the blade snapped in two. Blancanales lurched backward and the Vulcano’s blade cut across his collarbone instead of his throat. His Colima blade had been reduced to a ten-inch cleaver.

Blancanales backpedaled and blocked, hearing the slobbering and shuffling of the wounded Volcanos behind him catching up. He desperately hurled a glance backward and his stub of machete clanged as he blocked a blow. He kicked the young man in the groin and ripped his broken blade from ear to ear like he was slaughtering a pig.
