I’M A PROFESSIONAL

“Is there ever a good time for your best friend to go on a year-long world tour with her superstar boyfriend?” I grumble into the phone, wiping the sleep from my eyes.

On the other end of the line, T sighs.

“I’ll stop home here and there,” she reminds me.

“But it isn’t the same,” I whine. “I hate when you leave me.”

“You’ll be so busy going back and forth from New York to Boston, you won’t even notice I’m gone,” she tries to reason, but I shake my head.

“I’m not working on this shit for a year,” I exclaim. “I’ve already sent over sketches and the contract has been signed. I can do this in under four months.” I sit on the edge of my king-sized bed. “And when this is done, I’m meeting you wherever you are for drinks.”

“Four months? That’ll be Germany.”

“Beer, it is,” I say with a smile. I don’t say anything for a moment, not sure how to ask. But I force it out because I need to. “Is everything okay?”

She sighs again.

“Yeah. I think…I think he just needs me a little more than usual.”

I try not to be jealous, but it never works.

“I hate when he takes you from me,” I say, my voice low.

“No, you just hate being alone.”

The truth doesn’t sound nice, even in the soft way she shares it.

“Touché,” I mutter, flopping back on the bed.

“I know you’re strong but—”

“You don’t have to soften it for me. I can take it,” I inform her, rolling onto my side, away from my window. “When do you leave?”

“We’re boarding his jet now.”

There’s some shuffling and I hear her speaking to someone but it’s too muffled to make out.

“I’ve got to go, but I’ll call you when we land,” she rushes out before hanging up the line.

With a flourish, I toss my phone onto the chair in the corner of my bedroom.

I’ve been sleeping like shit since I got back, no matter what I do. A week of awful sleep has me cranky and wanting to ignore my now vibrating cellphone. Sure, it’s noon on a Saturday and I don’t owe anyone shit but I scramble to answer it anyway.

“What is it?” I snap when I see his name on my screen.

“Hey…” Selene starts. “I know we’re still finalizing some of our plans but we’re in the city.”

And?

I almost say it out loud, but I stop myself, opting to say nothing.

She continues without prompting.

“I have a few meetings, but Sam is starting to get cranky about the lack of furniture in the house, so is there any way you could tag along on a shopping trip?”

Why the fuck did I answer the phone?

“I actually have plans…” I start to lie, not sure where to go with the rest of my statement.

“If he gets something hideous, I’ll have to stare at it for the rest of my life.” I’m about to tell her that I can’t when she continues. “He won’t part with it and then we’ll have to rework whatever awful piece it is into our plans.
