It turned out, Fabio’s was a very nice Italian restaurant with a modern interior of gray and orange seats and tables in an open-concept style room with fourteen-foot ceilings and exposed pipes. The tall windows at the front let in the last of the evening light. It was a comfortable place, and as soon as my butt hit the soft, gray leather of the booth next to the window, I felt myself relax. But I’d also chugged my freshly poured glass of red wine in two giant gulps.

“That good, huh?” Laughed Adan, sitting across from me in the booth. He picked up the bottle of 2016 Mazzei Concerto di Fonterutoli and filled my glass halfway. Never heard of the wine, probably because I couldn’t afford it and it didn’t come in a box.

Gulping down my wine wasn’t going to win me any points in the first impression category, but knowing I’d feel the effects of the lovely wine in less than a minute, I didn’t care.

I grabbed my menu and started to go over the list of appetizers and main courses. My eyes blurred for a second and I blinked until my vision was clear. My head had started to pound again, only much worse. I needed something stronger than Tylenol. It could also be my body’s way of telling me it was running on empty. I needed to fuel it back up with some lovely carbs. And, oh boy, this menu was all about carbs. It was carb central. And I loved it. Carbs. Carbs. Carbs.

Having made my decision, I folded my menu, grabbed a slice of warm, homemade bread, piled on the butter like it was cream cheese, and took a bite.

I moaned. “Wow,” I said, chewing and letting the salted butter explode over my taste buds. “Good bread. Really good bread.”

Adan laughed again. He was easy to please. I liked a man who thought I was funny. Maybe this wasn’t such a bad idea after all.

As I buttered another slice of bread, a pretty woman about my age dressed in a black shirt and matching black pants stood at the edge of our table. A pad of paper and pen were clutched in her red painted fingernails.

“Have you made your choices?” Her dark eyes were on Adan, and lust flashed in them. She gave him a lazy smile that was way too intimate to give a stranger. When Adan didn’t answer right away, she leaned over, her hip touching his shoulder.

“The Costoletta di Vitello is very popular,” she purred, batting her fake eyelashes at him. She was practically undressing him with her eyes.

Okay, lady, control yourself I told her with my eyes, not that she noticed. Yes, Adan was hot, but this was just plain rude. I wasn’t a jealous woman, nor was I insecure about my looks, but the tramp had to go.

“I’ll have the Sicilienne Pizza,” I blurted loudly. “Thanks for asking. And some more bread would be nice.”

The waitress gave me a sour look, but she moved away from Adan, jotting down my order.
