“Running away again, Manuel?”

Manuel grabbed the edge of the door frame and leaned his head against the hard wood. “I’m not running, Davan, I just—” He pressed his lips together when his words threatened to turn into sobs.

How could he explain the anguish going on inside of him when he barely understood it himself? After all of these years of believing Davan had betrayed him, he suddenly knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that Davan had never lied to him—not about anything.

the top of them. He dropped his head back and looked across the room at Davan.

“What do you want me to do, Davan?” Manuel asked quietly.

“Tell me and I’ll do it.”

Davan looked stunned for just a moment, and then he swore softly and turned to walk over to the window again. Manuel watched Davan rub the back of his neck as if all the tension in the room was gathering there.

He pushed himself to his feet and crossed the room to stand behind Davan. He could see Davan watching him in the reflection in the window. Manuel lifted his hands and started kneading Davan’s shoulders.

He smiled when Davan groaned. Davan’s eyes slid closed and his head fell back on his shoulders. Manuel could feel the tense muscles under his hands start to loosen. The little sounds of pleasure Davan made were driving him crazy. Manuel wished those groans were meant for him, but he knew they weren’t. Davan had no reason to even want him after everything he had done.

“Do we have a chance, Davan?” Manuel murmured. He instantly felt the tension come back to Davan’s shoulders and wished he had kept his mouth shut, but the damage was done now and he figured he might as well continue. “Can we make this work, or do you want me to go to Elder Burke?”

“I’m supposed to decide that?” Davan asked, opening his eyes to look at Manuel's reflection in the window.

“I’ll do whatever you decide.”

“Why?”

“Because I’ve hurt you enough.” Manuel felt new tears prickle the corner of his eyes. “I love you, Davan, and I want to stay with you, but if you can’t forgive me for what I’ve done, I’ll understand. I won’t force you to be with me.”

Davan’s eyes darted away but not before Manuel saw the tears in them. “Why did you tell your family to make me go away if you loved me?”

“Oh, mi tesoro, I didn’t. I swear. If I had known you came after me—” Manuel shook his head. “I spent six months drunk, Davan. I barely remember anything but I know I never even knew you were there.”

“You were drunk?” Davan’s dark blond eyebrows shot up. He spun around to stare up at Manuel. “But I saw you. I heard you tell your father that you didn’t want to see me.”

“And you’re probably right.
