Chapter Fourteen
As soon as we returned to the house, Ramsey left, his taillights like tiny shards of red glass against the velvet shaded darkness. Angie went into the house with me, and I got out a bottle of cheap white wine. She had class the next day, so I knew she couldnât stay late, but I had to admit my nerves were a little on edge. It wasnât right, what was going on. It wasnât normal to find three dead bodies in a town the size of ours. The discovery of the mystery man, the first victim, made me feel that much more vulnerable. No one had known he was missing. No one was looking for him. No one cared. Now that he was dead, he was as lost as he had been when he was alive, just a set of fingerprints and DNA zipping through cyberspace looking for a hit.
I called Dolly to my side and rubbed her head. She was aging, but she was a tough old girl. Like most dogs, I had never seen a shadow of fight in her, but I believed if she knew I was in trouble, she would give her life to protect me. I was so glad I had her now.
âNow what are you going to do?â Angie asked me as I tipped back the last swallow of wine.
âDo? You mean tonight? Iâm going to let him do his investigation. I wouldnât be any help to him anyway.â
âAnd what about tomorrow and the next day? Do you know what else he has planned?â
âNo,â I said pouring myself another healthy dollop of wine. âI know he must have talked to Sheriff Fox at some time. And I know he has been in contact with someone in the FBI. He has pictures of the crime scene no one else should have. And he knows of evidence he shouldnât have heard about.â I took a sip and leaned back on the battered couch.
âThen you are just his connection to the people in the town,â Angie confirmed, one eyebrow arching.
I laughed at her expression. She had perfected it in the mirror and it was one of her favorite signs of disbelief.
âOh, stop it!â I cried. âI know it sounds ridiculous, but I feel like he is getting further because I am helping. And I wouldnât be doing this, no matter how much money he offered, if I didnât think it was going to help.â
âI know,â Angie replied, leaning back and covering her eyes with one hand. âThis is such a god-awful mess. I canât believe this is happening here. In Lawrence!â
I chuckled but my voice sounded dark. âIt has really hit home, hasnât it?â
