The loft was dark inside, the drapes were drawn and the cool air pumped steady from the vents. My fortress of solitude, my safe haven.

I walked to the safe and placed a quarter of a million cash and a dwindling supply of pills inside. The contents sitting there, I was betrothed to fate. I trudged up the stairs to my bed and laid down fully clothed, shoes still on, and slept without dreaming.

When I woke there was a single star visible through the skylight above me as my feet hung off of the bed. Checked my phone, it was two in the morning. No text messages, no missed calls. I walked down the stairs in a haze, phone in hand and opened the giant window. The sounds and smells of the city hit me. I called Jackie. She answered on the first ring.

“Sorry kid, I fell asleep. You still wanna take that walk?”

“For sure,” was all she said.

“You by Liana’s house?”

“I’ll be in front when you get here.”

“I’m on my way.”
