CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

At the same time that Teddy was rushing his family out of his house to hurry them to the airfield, and at the same time that Oz Drakos was hurrying to Gloria’s bar to retrieve her and their daughter and get them to Vegas, Charles “Big Daddy” Sinatra was still in his office in downtown Jericho, Maine, preparing the last of the evictions he had to serve on his noncompliant tenants. Fifteen in all. It was going to be a rough tomorrow.

And then his cell phone rang. Expecting it to be Jenay again telling him once again how late it was and that he needed to bring his butt home, he answered without looking at the Caller ID.

“I’m on my way, Jenay,” he said.

“This isn’t Jenay,” Mick said over the phone.

Charles hesitated. This late on a Saturday night and his kid brother was calling him? He knew something was wrong. “What happened?” he asked.

“I’m on my way to the airfield. My plane will be there within the hour to pick up you and your entire family. Round them up,” he ordered. “All of them.”

Everything was wrong with that command. Charles, the true patriarch of the Sinatra and Gabrini clans, didn’t take commands from anybody, including his kid brother. And why in the world would they need to go to Vegas? “What’s going on, Mick?” he asked him.

“Could you for once just do it?” Mick asked him.

“No. What’s going on?”

Mick exhaled. “Badrone,” he said.

Charles had his chair lifted on two legs and was leaned back. He sat upright when he heard that name. He was stunned. “He broke the truce?”

“No,” said Mick. “We did.”

“We did? Who the fuck is we?”

Mick exhaled again. His voice couldn’t betray how pissed he truly was. “I’ll give you ten guesses,” he said.

“Not Dommi’s ass again.”

“You got it right on the first guess.”

“What has he done now?”

“He killed Badrone’s son, Charles. He killed his boy.”

Charles leaned his head back in pure agony. Because he knew war was now avoidable. No matter what olive branches they could have ever tried to offer, he knew it wouldn’t be accepted. “I’ll round up my family on this end. Have you called Millie?” Millie was Amelia Sinatra, their kid sister.

“I’ll call Hammer. Millie and Hannibal’s with him in Montreal for his birthday.”

“Trevor Reese and Carly are in Montreal too,” said Charles. “Do I need to call Carly in?”

“Not if she and Trevor are with Hammer and Amelia. Hammer’s the former head of the CIA and running Special Ops too, although he’ll deny it. I’ll just let him know. He’ll protect them. He has the weight of the federal government on his side. They’re the only ones I’m not requiring to come with me.”

“You’d better call Monk Paletti then,” said Charles. “His stubborn ass will insist on protecting Ashley himself. He’s a typical mob boss. Just like you.”

“That’s why I’ll call him. You just round up the Jericho group and meet me at the airport. I’ll be there in an hour,” he added, and ended the call.
