27 Torstyn’s Life Choices

The best thing about private jets, besides basically everything, is that you don’t have all the hassle of being told when you can stand, walk around, or even go to the bathroom. On one of our flights, Quentin and Torstyn played hockey in the aisle.

I stowed the case of buttons in the overhead, then sat with Taylor next to a window on the port side of the plane so we could see everyone outside. Everyone waved goodbye as the jet taxied off toward the runway. I saw my mother bury her face in my father’s chest.

Taylor laid her head against my shoulder, and I just held her. After a moment she said, “Thank you.”

I looked down. “For what?”

“For loving me.”

Within a few minutes we were airborne. Most of the group hadn’t eaten, so Zeus raided the kitchen and played flight attendant, tossing out snacks and cans of juice and soda. Neither Taylor nor I wanted anything. Other than Ostin, McKenna, and Cassy, the rest of the group was pretty loud. I finally said to Taylor, “Let’s go lie down in back.”

“That would be good.”

There were two leather couches in the back of the plane. I got Taylor a blanket from an overhead bin; then we lay down on the opposing couches. She fell asleep quickly, which made me glad. She needed sleep more than I did, since she’d hit the ground running in just a few hours. I would have time to sleep on the flight to Peru.

A few minutes after Taylor was out, I went back up to the front of the plane.

“So you missed us after all,” Tessa said as I walked by her in the aisle.

“I always miss the clan,” I said.

She smiled. “It’s good to be missed.”

Cassy was reading a book as I passed her. She glanced over at me with a slight smile. I smiled back, and she returned to her book. She really was alone, which made me a little sad. I would have sat by her, but it would have caused problems. She wasn’t especially secretive about her feelings toward me.

I went to the front of the plane, knocked on the cockpit door, and then opened it. Our two pilots, Captains Scott and Boyd, were seated before a massive dock of flight controls, switches, monitors, and screens.

“Hey, Michael,” Captain Boyd said.

“Hey, guys. Could you let us know about an hour before landing in Dallas? We have some things we need to cover, but I want to let everyone sleep as long as possible.”

“Sure thing. I’ll make an announcement when we’re close.”

“Thank you.”

I walked back out to the cabin and sat down in a forward-facing seat near Ostin and McKenna, who were both asleep. Quentin came over and sat in the seat next to mine.

“We should probably brainstorm before we land in Texas,” he said.

“Yeah. I just asked the pilots to let us know when we’re an hour out. Taylor, Ostin, and McKenna need rest. An hour should give us enough time to go over team one’s game plan.
