Chapter Ten

What was she doing? What were they doing?

Kissing Dan Manning wasn’t part of the plan. Candy wasn’t supposed to be doing this. She wasn’t supposed to be kissing anyone, least of all her cranky neighbor. Her life was confusing enough as it was at the moment. Her career might be hanging by a thread and she still had no idea how to balance her demanding work schedule with taking care of Faith. She definitely didn’t need to add anything to the mix as topsy-turvy as developing feelings for someone...not even someone who just might not be as Grinchy as he’d let her believe. At least not during January through November, apparently.

But his mouth was so warm and the way he cupped her face as his lips moved against hers was so gentle, so tender that she felt precious and rare, like a vintage mercury glass ornament.

Timeless.

It’s just a kiss, she told herself. It doesn’t have to mean anything.

But the sound of her racing pulse drowned out her inner voice, right along with everything else. Her thoughts were a whirl. All she could do was feel—Dan’s fingertips as they moved from her face to her hair, the softness of his cashmere coat beneath her hands, the wild beat of his heart against hers. Whom was she trying to fool? This was no ordinary kiss. It was...

Magic. Just like that Christmas Eve so long ago at the gazebo.

“Hey, you two. I—” Wade’s voice stuttered to a halt as he walked out onto the deck. He glanced back and forth between Candy and Dan and held up his hands. “So sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt.”

A groan escaped Dan just as Candy took a big, backward leap away from him. She didn’t even know why she did it. The action was pure instinct, as if they were teenagers who’d just been caught making out in the hall at school.

“Mistletoe,” she blurted.

Wade bit back a smile.

Dan looked above their heads and frowned. There wasn’t a sprig of mistletoe in sight.

“It was there a second ago,” she said.

Why was she still talking? What difference did it make if Wade—or the entire Lovestruck Fire Department, for that matter—thought she went around kissing random men at holiday parties?

Not that Dan was some random man. She was beginning to think he just might be the opposite...an exceptional man. And the prospect scared the life out of her.

“You’re probably right.” Dan arched an eyebrow. She couldn’t tell if he was amused or furious. “I’m certain I saw a whole bushel of mistletoe up there earlier.”

A bushel? Really? Couldn’t he have backed her up in any sort of sensible way?

“Vanishing mistletoe aside, I thought you might want to come in. We’re about to do the Christmas ornament relay.” Wade winked. “Or not. If you’d rather stay out here...”

“Nope.” Candy drew herself up and pasted on a smile. “An ornament relay sounds fabulous. We’re in.”

She grabbed Dan’s arm and dragged him back inside the firehouse. Wade followed, laughing behind them, merry as could be.
