Chapter Five

Mercy

I stand when the door opens. A second later, Prince Hadrian of the most powerful vampire clan steps into the room. It’s strange knowing who he is now. It doesn’t change that physical reaction inside of me, a deep instinctual knowledge that I find him attractive, that any woman in her right mind would want to undress this man from all his finery and see what he hides beneath.

And yet, I’m no fool. I might be dangerous. I might be drawn to dangerous men. But I had a do-not-cross line, and fucking a murderous vampire just happened to be my line.

Who knew?

He enters the room and his eyes seem to bore into me for a brief moment that takes my breath away, and then a smile touches those lips of his and his gaze moves to my father. The two men shake hands and greet each other in the same way all these pompous asses seem to do.

My father finally looks at me again. “It sounds as if you’ve met my daughter, Mercy Rose Ravenwood, already?”

Prince Hadrian inclines his head. “She was a most charming dance partner.”

Father makes a strange sound, a combination of a laugh and a cough. “I’m, uh, happy to hear that. Now, Mercy, why don’t you get back to the party?”

I draw myself up taller. If something was going to go down between the vampire clans and our family, I was damned sure going to know about it, even if my father thought I wasn’t of a quality to rule.

“Shouldn’t I be aware of this new arrangement?”

“Daughter—”

“One day, I’ll be ruling after all.”

My father shuffles the papers on his desk. “Not necessarily.”

I don’t know why his answer irks me. Sure, he’d made it clear that I’d suck as the lady of house, but he’d never actually implied I wouldn’t take the role. Even if it wouldn’t be any time soon. “I am your only choice. Hate to point that out.”

“Well—” My father stops and jerks in a way I haven’t seen him do before. His eyes meet mine, and he looks horrified.

The floor drops out from under me. “Is Mother pregnant?”

My father’s mouth opens, but no words come out.

“You’re... too old.”

He looks uncomfortable. “This is a family matter, which we’ll discuss later.”

I march up to him and slam the surface of his desk. I don’t give a fuck that the prince of blood is there. I don’t give a fuck that my father hates insolence. “You’re already planning on naming your unborn child the heir? What if she’s as much of a fuck-up as I am?”

“He won’t...” My father pauses and shakes his head. “I think we’ve aired more than enough dirty laundry in front of our guest, haven’t we?”

I stare at him, hard. And I realize that even though in the past I’ve felt that my father didn’t love me, I told myself it was because my parents had no more love to give, except for with each other. I’d told myself a thousand reasons to explain away why I always felt like someone on the outside looking into my own family.
