Chapter Thirty-two

“She deserved to die!” yelled Robert.

“So, you admit it?” I said, keeping my eyes steady.

Mia let out another shriek.

“You… you… k… k… killed… R… Rebeca?”

“Katy, get her in the tunnel,” I said, not looking back.

“She won’t move!” cried Katy in an exasperated voice.

“You… s… s… said… if I t… tell Vic… Victoria, you… you’ll kill… me…,” Mia stuttered, her garbled voice rising.

“Shut up, woman!” Robert shouted, spittle flying from his mouth.

“Y… you k… killed R… Rebeca! H… how… c… could… you?” Mia’s voice was rising to a fever pitch.

“You don’t like the truth being spelled-out, do you?” I said, observing Robert carefully. “We know more about your nasty games than you think.”

He glowered.

“You adopted three girls from the mental institution. You abused them and played mind games, even marrying them in sham weddings to tighten your leash and keep them quiet. People like you should be locked up for life.”

Robert’s face tightened. He bared his teeth. “You bitch!”

I didn’t flinch.

His eyes flitted from me to Mia behind me.

“What you didn’t bank on was the girls were smarter and braver than you thought,” I said, glaring at him. “They decided to speak up and that must have been infuriating. Infuriating enough to kill them?”

“Shut your mouth!”

“How old were the girls when you supposedly adopted them?”

No answer, but if his eyes could kill, I would have turned to cinders.

Mia’s raspy voice came from behind me.

“I… I… was t… twelve….”

The fury I’d been trying to contain all along rushed up my spine and threatened to explode in my head. I pressed my weapon to his temple.

“You’re a dead man,” I said, between clenched teeth.

That was when Robert pushed Nancy in front of him.

I whipped around her, but he dove to the floor, his arm wrapped around her neck.

Nancy shrieked and flailed.

I aimed at Robert’s torso, then his legs, then his head, but Nancy was thrashing violently.

“Let her go, you scumbag,” I shouted, as I tried to get a good aim.

The rotten wood on the railing broke in two. Robert and Nancy toppled off the porch and rolled on the icy ground.

Nancy was fighting back like an angry mountain lioness, but that wasn’t helping me.

I jumped down after them.

Suddenly, Robert released her. Nancy sprang up and jumped toward me.

“Move!” I yelled, pushing her away.

Instead, she flung her arms around my neck and held on tight, weeping. I turned, but Robert had already vanished to the other side of the shed.

I pulled Nancy back against the wall, knowing he could easily fire at either of us, at any second.

“Get down,” I said to Nancy. “Please. Now.”

She clung to me.

I aimed my weapon at the corner of the wall and pulled the trigger.

Nancy jumped three feet high.

The sound of someone scrambling came from the other side of the shed. Pushing Nancy behind me, I stepped toward the corner, my weapon aimed forward.

He had disappeared.

“Robert!” I shouted. “You won’t get away with this.”

Silence.

I scanned the woods, keeping cover by the wall. My eyes darted back and forth, trying to ignore the chaos that had erupted behind me.
