* The problem of trying to estimate the value in modern monetary terms of Renaissance currencies is a difficult one. The best that can be done is to indicate a few examples of contemporary wages and prices to give the reader some idea. In Florence, around 1400, the lowest paid manual workers received the equivalent of 20–25 florins a year, while a skilled artisan would get about twice that. A florin would buy two barrels of red wine or 50 kilos of meat. A florin and a ducat were of roughly equal value.
