I could tell from the look on Paisley’s face she was happy to be back. Truth be told, so was I. We had sex before we said a word. It was absolutely phenomenal. But now that we were sitting in my bed, Paisley had tears in her eyes.

I didn’t know what to say, but I knew we couldn’t pretend that nothing happened. “Where were you?”

“I was in Jamaica with Bobby.”

She could’ve knocked me over right there. I mean, I knew it, but to hear her say it was heartbreaking.

“I couldn’t talk because he was always around.”

I looked at her as if she had lost her mind. Any hope I had of us working this out was quickly waning.

“I—I had never been to Jamaica. Had always dreamed about it but never could afford to go. Me and Bobby came up on some money one time when we were together and bought a time-share, and it was about to expire. I just wanted the experience and I didn’t want to lose my thousand dollars.”

Now I knew she was crazy. I got up from the bed and began pacing the floor. “Tell me you went for closure. Tell me you went to make sure you were over him. Don’t say you went for a thousand dollars. I’d have given you a thousand dollars.”

“It wasn’t just about the money.” She wept. “You’re right about the closure thing. I had to make sure I didn’t have any lingering feelings. I mean, we’re talking about marriage. I just needed to know.”

I wanted to tell her to get out, right then and there. Instead, I said, “So do you know?”

She stood up. “Without a shadow of a doubt. Caleb, I only want to marry one time. And every part of me is telling me you’re the man for me, but this prenup thing is messing with me. It’s obvious you don’t trust me and so that has me wondering can we really make it if there’s no trust. So all that stuff is racing through my mind and Bobby comes along and, I don’t know, I guess I couldn’t go forward until that part of my life was completely closed.”

I glared at her. “Did you sleep with him?”

“No. I swear. I didn’t let him touch me.”

“Y’all sleep in the same bed?”

“No, I made him get double beds.”

I didn’t know what to believe. “He didn’t try anything?”

“He tried, but I said no. And besides, I was on my cycle.”

This shit was making absolutely no sense to me. “I can’t deal with this, Paisley.”

“Just give me another chance.”

I spun on her. “For what? So you can do this again?”

She looked at me with tear-filled eyes. “Just let me hold you.”

“What do you think holding me is gon’ do?”

Her arms wrapped around me like a soft octopus, walking me back to the bed. I wanted to curse her out, but I let her hands roam all over my body instead.

She lowered me onto my bed, gently planting kisses all over me.
